They replied,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Jesus the Nazarene.&#8221; He told them, &#8220;I am he.&#8221; (Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, was standing there with them.)<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">So Pilate went back into the governor&#8217;s residence,<n id="1" /> summoned Jesus, and asked him, &#8220;Are you the king of the Jews?&#8221;<n id="2" />

Pilate answered, &#8220;I am not a Jew, am I?<n id="1" /> Your own people<n id="2" /> and your chief priests handed you over<n id="3" /> to me. What have you done?&#8221;p>

But it is your custom that I release one prisoner<n id="1" /> for you at the Passover.<n id="2" /> So do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?&#8221;

and he went back into the governor&#8217;s residence<n id="1" /> and said to Jesus, &#8220;Where do you come from?&#8221; But Jesus gave him no answer.

Pilate also had a notice<n id="1" /> written and fastened to the cross,<n id="2" /> which read:<n id="3" /> &#8220;Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews.&#8221;

And the person who saw it<n id="1" /> has testified (and his testimony is true, and he<n id="2" /> knows that he is telling the truth),<n id="3" /> so that you also may believe.

Then they took Jesus&#8217; body and wrapped it, with the aromatic spices,<n id="1" /> in strips of linen cloth<n id="2" /> according to Jewish burial customs.<n id="3" />

and the face cloth,<n id="1" /> which had been around Jesus&#8217; head, not lying with the strips of linen cloth but rolled up in a place by itself.<n id="2" />

When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,<n id="1" /> but she did not know that it was Jesus.p>

<p class="bodytext">Now Jesus performed<n id="1" /> many other miraculous signs in the presence of the<n id="2" /> disciples, which are not recorded<n id="3" /> in this book.<n id="4" />

<p class="bodytext">When it was already very early morning, Jesus stood on the beach, but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever. The bread<n id="1" /> that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">Then Jesus, while teaching in the temple courts,<n id="1" /> cried out,<n id="2" /> &#8220;You both know me and know where I come from!<n id="3" /> And I have not come on my own initiative,<n id="4" /> but the one who sent me<n id="5" /> is true. You do not know him,<n id="6" />

<p class="bodytext">Then some of the Pharisees began to say,<n id="1" /> &#8220;This man is not from God, because he does not observe<n id="2" /> the Sabbath.&#8221;<n id="3" /> But others said, &#8220;How can a man who is a sinner perform<n id="4" /> such miraculous signs?&#8221; Thus there was a division<n id="5" /> among them.

<p class="bodytext">Then, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies should not stay on the crosses on the Sabbath<n id="1" /> (for that Sabbath was an especially important one),<n id="2" /> the Jewish leaders<n id="3" /> asked Pilate to have the victims&#8217; legs<n id="4" /> broken<n id="5" /> and the bodies taken down.<n id="6" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the disciples had gathered together<n id="1" /> and locked the doors<n id="2" /> of the place<n id="3" /> because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.<n id="4" /> Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, &#8220;Peace be with you.&#8221;

Jesus<n id="1" /> answered,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Come and you will see.&#8221; So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about four o&#8217;clock in the afternoon.<n id="3" />p>

Andrew brought Simon<n id="1" /> to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, &#8220;You are Simon, the son of John.<n id="2" /> You will be called Cephas&#8221; (which is translated Peter).<n id="3" />p>

Nathanael asked him, &#8220;How do you know me?&#8221; Jesus replied,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree,<n id="2" /> I saw you.&#8221;
