<p class="poetry">These were the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter. She bore these to Jacob, seven in all.p>

Counting the two sons<n id="1" /> of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt, all the people of the household of Jacob who were in Egypt numbered seventy.<n id="2" />p>

The men are shepherds;<n id="1" /> they take care of livestock.<n id="2" /> They have brought their flocks and their herds and all that they have.&#8217;

<t /><p class="bodytext">Joseph went and told Pharaoh, &#8220;My father, my brothers, their flocks and herds, and all that they own have arrived from the land ofp> <p class="bodytext">Canaan. They are now<n id="1" /> in the land of Goshen.&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">So Joseph settled his father and his brothers. He gave them territory<n id="1" /> in the land of Egypt, in the best region of the land, the land of Rameses,<n id="2" /> just as Pharaoh had commanded.

When you gather in the crop,<n id="1" /> give<n id="2" /> one-fifth of it to Pharaoh, and the rest<n id="3" /> will be yours for seed for the fields and for you to eat, including those in your households and your little children.&#8221;

Joseph said to his father, &#8220;They are the<n id="1" /> sons God has given me in this place.&#8221; His father<n id="2" /> said, &#8220;Bring them to me so I may bless them.&#8221;<n id="3" />

<p class="poetry">Then he blessed Joseph and said,p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;May the God before whom my fathersp> <p class="poetry">Abraham and Isaac walked &#8211;p> <p class="poetry">the God who has been my shepherd<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">all my life long to this day,p>

As one who is above your<n id="1" /> brothers, I give to you the mountain slope,<n id="2" /> which I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow.&#8221;p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">Jacob called for his sons and said, &#8220;Gather together so I can tell you<n id="1" /> what will happen to you in the future.<n id="2" />p>

<p class="bodytext">Then he instructed them,<n id="1" /> &#8220;I am about to go<n id="2" /> to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite.

<p class="bodytext">When they came to the threshing floor of Atad<n id="1" /> on the other side of the Jordan, they mourned there with very great and bitter sorrow.<n id="2" /> There Joseph observed a seven day period of mourning for his father.

<p class="bodytext">God said, &#8220;Let the land produce vegetation:<n id="1" /> plants yielding seeds according to their kinds,<n id="2" /> and<n id="3" /> trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds.&#8221; It was so.

God created the great sea creatures<n id="1" /> and every living and moving thing with which the water swarmed, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. God saw that it was good.

And to all the animals of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to all the creatures that move on the ground &#8211; everything that has the breath of life in it &#8211; I give<n id="1" /> every green plant for food.&#8221; It was so.p>

The <sc>Lordsc> God formed<n id="1" /> out of the ground every living animal of the field and every bird of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would<n id="2" /> name them, and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now<n id="1" /> the serpent<n id="2" /> was more shrewd<n id="3" />p> <p class="bodytext">than any of the wild animals<n id="4" /> that the <sc>Lordsc> God had made. He said to the woman, &#8220;Is it really true that<n id="5" /> God<n id="6" /> said, &#8216;You must not eat from any tree of the orchard&#8217;?&#8221;<n id="7" />

<p class="poetry">But to Adam<n id="1" /> he said,p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;Because you obeyed<n id="2" /> your wifep> <p class="poetry">and ate from the tree about which I commanded you,p> <p class="poetry">&#8216;You must not eat from it,&#8217;p> <p class="poetry">cursed is the ground<n id="3" /> thanks to you;<n id="4" />p> <p class="poetry">in painful toil you will eat<n id="5" /> of it all the days of your life.p>

So the <sc>Lordsc> said, &#8220;I will wipe humankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth &#8211; everything from humankind to animals,<n id="1" /> including creatures that move on the ground and birds of the air, for I regret that I have made them.&#8221;p>

For in seven days<n id="1" /> I will cause it to rain<n id="2" /> on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the ground every living thing that I have made.&#8221;p>
