&#8220;Speak to Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites and tell them, &#8216;When any man<n id="1" /> from the house of Israel or from the foreigners in Israel<n id="2" /> presents his offering for any of the votive or freewill offerings which they present to the <sc>Lordsc> as a burnt offering,

<p class="bodytext">Nadab and Abihu died<n id="1" /> before the <sc>Lordsc><n id="2" /> when they offered<n id="3" /> strange<n id="4" /> fire<n id="5" /> before the <sc>Lordsc> in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children.<n id="6" /> So Eleazar and Ithamar ministered as priests<n id="7" /> in the presence of<n id="8" /> Aaron their father.p>

<p class="bodytext">But those who were to camp in front of the tabernacle on the east, in front of the tent of meeting, were Moses, Aaron,<n id="1" /> and his sons. They were responsible for the needs<n id="2" /> of the sanctuary and for the needs of the Israelites, but the unauthorized person who approached was to be put to death.

All who were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered by the word<n id="1" /> of the <sc>Lordsc>, according to their families, every male from a month old and upward, were 22,000.<n id="2" />p>

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;When Aaron and his sons have finished<n id="1" /> covering<n id="2" /> the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is ready to journey, then<n id="3" /> the Kohathites will come to carry them;<n id="4" /> but they must not touch<n id="5" /> any<n id="6" /> holy thing, or they will die.<n id="7" /> These are the responsibilities<n id="8" /> of the Kohathites with the tent of meeting.p>

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;The appointed responsibility of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest is for the oil for the light, and the spiced incense, and the daily grain offering, and the anointing oil; he also has<n id="1" /> the appointed responsibility over all the tabernacle with<n id="2" /> all that is in it, over the sanctuary and over all its furnishings.&#8221;<n id="3" />p>

but in order that they will live<n id="1" /> and not die when they approach the most holy things, do this for them: Aaron and his sons will go in and appoint<n id="2" /> each man<n id="3" /> to his service and his responsibility.

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;All the service of the Gershonites, whether<n id="1" /> carrying loads<n id="2" /> or for any of their work, will be at the direction of<n id="3" /> Aaron and his sons. You will assign them all their tasks<n id="4" /> as their responsibility.

I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons from among the Israelites, to do the work for the Israelites in the tent of meeting, and to make atonement for the Israelites, so there will be no plague among the Israelites when the Israelites come near the sanctuary.&#8221;<n id="1" />p>

<p class="bodytext">So Moses and Aaron and the entire community of the Israelites did this with the Levites. According to all that the <sc>Lordsc> commanded Moses concerning the Levites, this is what the Israelites did with them.

After this, the Levites went in to do their work in the tent of meeting before Aaron and before his sons. As the <sc>Lordsc> had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did.p>

<p class="bodytext">It happened that some men<n id="1" /> who were ceremonially defiled<n id="2" /> by the dead body of a man<n id="3" /> could not keep<n id="4" /> the Passover on that day, so they came before Moses and before Aaron on that day.

<t /><p class="bodytext">They came back<n id="1" /> to Moses and Aaron and to the whole community of the Israelites in the wilderness of Paran at Kadesh.<n id="2" /> They reported<n id="3" /> to the whole community and showed the fruit of the land.

And all the Israelites murmured<n id="1" /> against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, &#8220;If only we had died<n id="2" /> in the land of Egypt, or if only we had perished<n id="3" /> in this wilderness!

And they assembled against Moses and Aaron, saying to them, &#8220;You take too much upon yourselves,<n id="1" /> seeing that the whole community is holy, every one of them, and the <sc>Lordsc> is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the community of the <sc>Lordsc>?&#8221;p>

It was a memorial for the Israelites, that no outsider who is not a descendant of<n id="1" /> Aaron should approach to burn incense before the <sc>Lordsc>, that he might not become like Korah and his company &#8211; just as the <sc>Lordsc> had spoken by the authority<n id="2" /> of Moses.

Then Moses said to Aaron, &#8220;Take the censer, put burning coals from the altar in it, place incense on it, and go quickly into the assembly and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from the <sc>Lordsc> &#8211; the plague has begun!&#8221;

So Aaron did<n id="1" /> as Moses commanded<n id="2" /> and ran into the middle of the assembly, where the plague was just beginning among the people. So he placed incense on the coals and made atonement for the people.

<p class="bodytext">So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and each of their leaders gave him a staff, one for each leader,<n id="1" /> according to their tribes<n id="2" /> &#8211; twelve staffs; the staff of Aaron was among their staffs.

<p class="bodytext">On the next day Moses went into the tent of the testimony &#8211; and<n id="1" /> the staff of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted, and brought forth buds, and produced blossoms, and yielded almonds!<n id="2" />
