<p class="bodyblock">If David himself calls him &#8216;Lord,&#8217; how can he be his son?&#8221;<n id="1" /> And the large crowd was listening to him with delight.p>

While they were at the table<n id="1" /> eating, Jesus said, &#8220;I tell you the truth,<n id="2" /> one of you eating with me will betray me.&#8221;<n id="3" />

But Peter<n id="1" /> insisted emphatically,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you.&#8221; And all of them said the same thing.p>

Then<n id="1" /> he came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, &#8220;Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn&#8217;t you stay awake for one hour?

One of the bystanders drew his sword and struck the high priest&#8217;s slave,<n id="1" /> cutting off his ear.

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find anything.

But he denied it again. A short time later the bystanders again said to Peter, &#8220;You must be<n id="1" /> one of them, because you are also a Galilean.&#8221;

So<n id="1" /> Pilate asked him, &#8220;Are you the king<n id="2" /> of the Jews?&#8221; He replied,<n id="3" /> &#8220;You say so.&#8221;<n id="4" />

So Pilate spoke to them again,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Then what do you want me to do<n id="2" /> with the one you call king of the Jews?&#8221;

Because he wanted to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them. Then,<n id="1" /> after he had Jesus flogged,<n id="2" /> he handed him over<n id="3" /> to be crucified.p>

Those who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads and saying, &#8220;Aha! You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,

In the same way even the chief priests &#8211; together with the experts in the law<n id="1" /> &#8211; were mocking him among themselves:<n id="2" /> &#8220;He saved others, but he cannot save himself!

Now when the centurion,<n id="1" /> who stood in front of him, saw how he died,<n id="2" /> he said, &#8220;Truly this man was God&#8217;s Son!&#8221;

There were also women, watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses,<n id="1" /> and Salome.
