So the king assigned them a daily ration<n id="1" /> from his royal delicacies<n id="2" /> and from the wine he himself drank. They were to be trained<n id="3" /> for the next three years. At the end of that time they were to enter the king&#8217;s service.<n id="4" />

When the king spoke with them, he did not find among the entire group<n id="1" /> anyone like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, or Azariah. So they entered the king&#8217;s service.<n id="2" />

The king issued an order<n id="1" /> to summon the magicians, astrologers, sorcerers, and wise men<n id="2" /> in order to explain his dreams to him.<n id="3" /> So they came and awaited the king&#8217;s instructions.<n id="4" />p>

I saw that the ram was butting westward, northward, and southward. No animal<n id="1" /> was able to stand before it, and there was none who could deliver from its power.<n id="2" /> It did as it pleased and acted arrogantly.<n id="3" />p>

It came to the two-horned ram that I had seen standing beside the canal and rushed against it with raging strength.<n id="1" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">While I, Daniel, was watching the vision, I sought to understand it. Now one who appeared to be a man was standing before me.

So he approached the place where I was standing. As he came, I felt terrified and fell flat on the ground.<n id="1" /> Then he said to me, &#8220;Understand, son of man,<n id="2" /> that the vision pertains to the time of the end.&#8221;

By his treachery<n id="1" /> he will succeed through deceit.<n id="2" /> He will have an arrogant attitude,<n id="3" /> and he will destroy many who are unaware of his schemes.<n id="4" /> He will rise up against the Prince of princes, yet he will be broken apart &#8211; but not by human agency.<n id="5" />

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;There will arise in his<n id="1" /> place one from her family line<n id="2" /> who will come against their army and will enter the stronghold of the king of the north and will move against them successfully.<n id="3" />

He will also take their gods into captivity to Egypt, along with their cast images and prized utensils of silver and gold. Then he will withdraw for some years from<n id="1" /> the king of the north.

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;Then the king of the south<n id="1" /> will be enraged and will march out to fight against the king of the north, who will also muster a large army, but that army will be delivered into his hand.

For the king of the north will again muster an army, one larger than before. At the end of some years he will advance with a huge army and enormous supplies.p>

There will arise after him<n id="1" /> one<n id="2" /> who will send out an exactor<n id="3" /> of tribute to enhance the splendor of the kingdom, but after a few days he will be destroyed,<n id="4" /> though not in anger or battle.p>

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;Then there will arise in his place a despicable person<n id="1" /> to whom the royal honor has not been rightfully conferred. He will come on the scene in a time of prosperity and will seize the kingdom through deceit.

<p class="bodytext">I, Daniel, watched as two others stood there, one on each side of the river.<n id="1" />

<p class="poetry">You stood aloof<n id="1" /> while strangers took his army<n id="2" /> captive,p> <p class="poetry">and foreigners advanced to his gates.<n id="3" />p> <p class="poetry">When they cast lots<n id="4" /> over Jerusalem,<n id="5" />p> <p class="poetry">you behaved as though you were in league<n id="6" /> with them.p>

<p class="poetry">He will assume his post<n id="1" /> and shepherd the people<n id="2" /> by the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s strength,p> <p class="poetry">by the sovereign authority of the <sc>Lordsc> his God.<n id="3" />p> <p class="poetry">They will live securely,<n id="4" /> for at that time he will be honored<n id="5" />p> <p class="poetry">even in the distant regions of<n id="6" /> the earth.p>
