Moses proclaimed to all Israel as follows: “You have seen all that the Lord did ¹  in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, all his servants, and his land.

This is the nature of the cancellation: Every creditor must remit what he has loaned to another person; ¹  he must not force payment from his fellow Israelite, ²  for it is to be recognized as “the Lord’s cancellation of debts.”

(The Emites ¹  used to live there, a people as powerful, numerous, and tall as the Anakites.

Their territory extended ¹  from Aroer at the edge of the Arnon valley as far as Mount Siyon ²  – that is, Hermon –

I will personally hold responsible ¹  anyone who then pays no attention to the words that prophet ²  speaks in my name.

Gather the people – men, women, and children, as well as the resident foreigners in your villages – so they may hear and thus learn about and fear the Lord your God and carefully obey all the words of this law.
