Then the Jewish leaders<n id="1" /> said to him, &#8220;This temple has been under construction<n id="2" /> for forty-six years,<n id="3" /> and are you going to raise it up in three days?&#8221;

&#8220;Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Surely he can&#8217;t be the Messiah,<n id="1" /> can he?&#8221;<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">Now when the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus<n id="1" /> performed, they began to say to one another, &#8220;This is certainly <i>the Propheti><n id="2" /> <i>who is to come into the worldi>.&#8221;<n id="3" />

(Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God &#8211; he<n id="1" /> has seen the Father.)<n id="2" />

This<n id="1" /> is the bread that has come down from heaven, so that a person<n id="2" /> may eat from it and not die.

<p class="bodytext">Then the Jews who were hostile to Jesus<n id="1" /> began to argue with one another,<n id="2" /> &#8220;How can this man<n id="3" /> give us his flesh to eat?&#8221;

Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things,<n id="1" /> said, &#8220;This is a difficult<n id="2" /> saying!<n id="3" /> Who can understand it?&#8221;<n id="4" />

You go up<n id="1" /> to the feast yourselves. I am not going up to this feast<n id="2" /> because my time<n id="3" /> has not yet fully arrived.&#8221;<n id="4" />

Yet here he is, speaking publicly,<n id="1" /> and they are saying nothing to him.<n id="2" /> Do the rulers really know that this man<n id="3" /> is the Christ?<n id="4" />

Yet many of the crowd<n id="1" /> believed in him and said, &#8220;Whenever the Christ<n id="2" /> comes, he won&#8217;t perform more miraculous signs than this man did, will he?&#8221;<n id="3" />p>

Others said, &#8220;This is the Christ!&#8221;<n id="1" /> But still others said, &#8220;No,<n id="2" /> for the Christ doesn&#8217;t come from Galilee, does he?<n id="3" />

His disciples asked him,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Rabbi, who committed the sin that caused him to be born blind, this man<n id="2" /> or his parents?&#8221;<n id="3" />

Jesus answered, &#8220;Neither this man<n id="1" /> nor his parents sinned, but he was born blind so that<n id="2" /> the acts<n id="3" /> of God may be revealed<n id="4" /> through what happens to him.<n id="5" />

<p class="bodytext">Then the neighbors and the people who had seen him previously<n id="1" /> as a beggar began saying,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Is this not the man<n id="3" /> who used to sit and beg?&#8221;

Some people said,<n id="1" /> &#8220;This is the man!&#8221;<n id="2" /> while others said, &#8220;No, but he looks like him.&#8221;<n id="3" /> The man himself<n id="4" /> kept insisting, &#8220;I am the one!&#8221;<n id="5" />

They asked the parents,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Is this your son, whom you say<n id="2" /> was born blind? Then how does he now see?&#8221;

So his parents replied,<n id="1" /> &#8220;We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.

Jesus told them this parable,<n id="1" /> but they<n id="2" /> did not understand<n id="3" /> what he was saying to them.p>

So the chief priests and the Pharisees<n id="1" /> called the council<n id="2" /> together and said, &#8220;What are we doing? For this man is performing many miraculous signs.

So these approached Philip,<n id="1" /> who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Sir, we would like to see Jesus.&#8221;
