<t /><p class="bodytext">Then<n id="1" /> James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said, &#8220;Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.&#8221;

<t /><p class="bodytext">So<n id="1" /> while he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John,<n id="2" /> and Andrew asked him privately,

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now Herod<n id="1" /> the tetrarch<n id="2" /> heard about everything that was happening, and he was thoroughly perplexed,<n id="3" /> because some people were saying that John<n id="4" /> had been raised from the dead,

<t /><p class="bodytext">John answered,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop<n id="2" /> him because he is not a disciple<n id="3" /> along with us.&#8221;

Now when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, &#8220;Lord, do you want us <i>to call fire to come down from heaven and consumei><n id="1" /> <i>themi>?&#8221;<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">John answered them,<n id="1" /> &#8220;I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not recognize,<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">Then<n id="1" /> John testified,<n id="2" /> &#8220;I saw the Spirit descending like a dove<n id="3" /> from heaven,<n id="4" /> and it remained on him.<n id="5" />

John<n id="1" /> was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim,<n id="2" /> because water was plentiful there, and people were coming<n id="3" /> to him<n id="4" /> and being baptized.

<p class="bodytext">John replied,<n id="1" /> &#8220;No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now when Jesus<n id="1" /> knew that the Pharisees<n id="2" /> had heard that he<n id="3" /> was winning<n id="4" /> and baptizing more disciples than John

<p class="bodytext">Jesus<n id="1" /> went back across the Jordan River<n id="2" /> again to the place where John<n id="3" /> had been baptizing at an earlier time,<n id="4" /> and he stayed there.

But Peter and John replied,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Whether it is right before God to obey<n id="2" /> you rather than God, you decide,

you know what happened throughout Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John announced:<n id="1" />

And I remembered the word of the Lord,<n id="1" /> as he used to say,<n id="2" /> &#8216;John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.&#8217;<n id="3" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then Paul and his companions put out to sea<n id="1" /> from Paphos<n id="2" /> and came to Perga<n id="3" /> in Pamphylia,<n id="4" /> but John<n id="5" /> left them and returned to Jerusalem.<n id="6" />

<p class="bodytext">Now John wore clothing made from camel&#8217;s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his diet consisted of locusts and wild honey.<n id="1" />

Now these are the names of the twelve apostles:<n id="1" /> first, Simon<n id="2" /> (called Peter), and Andrew his brother; James son of Zebedee and John his brother;

and he said to his servants, &#8220;This is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead! And because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him.&#8221;

For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe. Although<n id="1" /> you saw this, you did not later change your minds<n id="2" /> and believe him.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now<n id="1" /> King Herod<n id="2" /> heard this, for Jesus&#8217;<n id="3" /> name had become known. Some<n id="4" /> were saying, &#8220;John the baptizer<n id="5" /> has been raised from the dead, and because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him.&#8221;
