For out of great distress and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears, not to make you sad, but to let you know the love that I have especially for you.<n id="1" />

We were encouraged<n id="1" /> not only by his arrival, but also by the encouragement<n id="2" /> you gave<n id="3" /> him, as he reported to us your longing, your mourning,<n id="4" /> your deep concern<n id="5" /> for me, so that I rejoiced more than ever.

For see what this very thing, this sadness<n id="1" /> as God intended, has produced in you: what eagerness, what defense of yourselves,<n id="2" /> what indignation,<n id="3" /> what alarm, what longing, what deep concern,<n id="4" /> what punishment!<n id="5" /> In everything you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

So then, even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did wrong, or on account of the one who was wronged, but to reveal to you your eagerness on our behalf<n id="1" /> before God.

For if I have boasted to him about anything concerning you, I have not been embarrassed by you,<n id="1" /> but just as everything we said to you was true,<n id="2" /> so our boasting to Titus about you<n id="3" /> has proved true as well.

But as you excel<n id="1" /> in everything &#8211; in faith, in speech, in knowledge, and in all eagerness and in the love from us that is in you<n id="2" /> &#8211; make sure that you excel<n id="3" /> in this act of kindness<n id="4" /> too.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now I, Paul, appeal to you<n id="1" /> personally<n id="2" /> by the meekness and gentleness<n id="3" /> of Christ (I who am meek<n id="4" /> when present among<n id="5" /> you, but am full of courage<n id="6" /> toward you when away!) &#8211;

Nor do we boast beyond certain limits<n id="1" /> in the work<n id="2" /> done by others, but we hope<n id="3" /> that as your faith continues to grow, our work may be greatly expanded<n id="4" /> among you according to our limits,<n id="5" />

When<n id="1" /> I was with you and was in need, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia fully supplied my needs.<n id="2" /> I<n id="3" /> kept myself from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue to do so.

For I am afraid that somehow when I come I will not find you what I wish, and you will find me<n id="1" /> not what you wish. I am afraid that<n id="2" /> somehow there may be quarreling, jealousy, intense anger, selfish ambition,<n id="3" /> slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder.
