You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho.<n id="1" /> The leaders<n id="2" /> of Jericho, as well as the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites, fought with you, but I handed them over to you.

<p class="bodytext">Elijah said to him, &#8220;Elisha, stay here, for the <sc>Lordsc> has sent me to Jericho.&#8221;<n id="1" /> But he replied, &#8220;As certainly as the <sc>Lordsc> lives and as you live, I will not leave you.&#8221; So they went to Jericho.

<p class="bodytext">These are those who were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the Israelites in the plains of Moab along the Jordan River opposite Jericho.<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">These are the commandments and the decisions that the <sc>Lordsc> commanded the Israelites through the authority<n id="1" /> of Moses, on the plains of Moab by the Jordan River<n id="2" /> opposite Jericho.<n id="3" />p>

The king of Jericho received this report: &#8220;Note well!<n id="1" /> Israelite men have come here tonight<n id="2" /> to spy on the land.&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">So the Israelites camped in Gilgal and celebrated the Passover in the evening of the fourteenth day of the month on the plains of Jericho.<n id="1" />

The <sc>Lordsc> told Joshua, &#8220;See, I am about to defeat Jericho for you,<n id="1" /> along with its king and its warriors.

Do to Ai and its king what you did to Jericho<n id="1" /> and its king, except you may plunder its goods and cattle. Set an ambush behind the city!&#8221;p>

Messengers<n id="1" /> told David what had happened,<n id="2" /> so he summoned them, for the men were thoroughly humiliated. The king said, &#8220;Stay in Jericho<n id="3" /> until your beards have grown again; then you may come back.&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">When the members of the prophetic guild in Jericho,<n id="1" /> who were standing at a distance,<n id="2" /> saw him do this, they said, &#8220;The spirit that energized Elijah<n id="3" /> rests upon Elisha.&#8221; They went to meet him and bowed down to the ground before him.

But the Babylonian army chased after the king. They caught up with him in the plains of Jericho,<n id="1" /> and his entire army deserted him.

<p class="bodytext">Within the territory of the tribe of Reuben across the Jordan River east of Jericho:<n id="1" /> Bezer in the desert and its pasturelands, Jahzah and its pasturelands,

&#8220;Go up to this Abarim<n id="1" /> hill country, to Mount Nebo (which is in the land of Moab opposite Jericho<n id="2" />) and look at the land of Canaan that I am giving to the Israelites as a possession.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then Moses ascended from the deserts of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the summit of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho.<n id="1" /> The <sc>Lordsc> showed him the whole land &#8211; Gilead to Dan,

<t /><p class="bodytext">Joshua son of Nun sent two spies out from Shittim secretly and instructed them:<n id="1" /> &#8220;Find out what you can about the land, especially Jericho.&#8221;<n id="2" /> They stopped at the house of a prostitute named Rahab and spent the night there.<n id="3" />

So the king of Jericho sent this order to Rahab:<n id="1" /> &#8220;Turn over<n id="2" /> the men who came to you<n id="3" /> &#8211; the ones who came to your house<n id="4" /> &#8211; for they have come to spy on the whole land!&#8221;

the water coming downstream toward them stopped flowing.<n id="1" /> It piled up far upstream<n id="2" /> at Adam (the city near Zarethan); there was no water at all flowing to the sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea).<n id="3" /> The people crossed the river opposite Jericho.<n id="4" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">When Joshua was near<n id="1" /> Jericho,<n id="2" /> he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him holding a drawn sword.<n id="3" /> Joshua approached him and asked him, &#8220;Are you on our side or allied with our enemies?&#8221;<n id="4" />
