But his sons did not follow ¹  his ways. Instead, they made money dishonestly, accepted bribes, and perverted justice. ² 

But the people refused to heed Samuel’s warning. ¹  Instead they said, “No! There will be a king over us!

Why haven’t you obeyed ¹  the Lord? Instead you have greedily rushed upon the plunder! You have done what is wrong in the Lord’s estimation.” ² 

Then Jesse presented ¹  Shammah. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.”

Saul retained David ¹  on that day and did not allow him to return to his father’s house.

(Now the servant did not understand any of this. Only Jonathan and David knew what was going on.) ¹

Jonathan ¹  said to him, “By no means are you going to die! My father does nothing ²  large or small without making me aware of it. ³  Why would my father hide this matter from me? It just won’t happen!”

The servants of Achish said to him, “Isn’t this David, the king of the land? Isn’t he the one that they sing about when they dance, saying, ‘Saul struck down his thousands, But David his tens of thousands’?”
