This shall be the priests&#8217; fair allotment<n id="1" /> from the people who offer sacrifices, whether bull or sheep &#8211; they must give to the priest the shoulder, the jowls, and the stomach.

<p class="bodytext">If controversy arises between people,<n id="1" /> they should go to court for judgment. When the judges<n id="2" /> hear the case, they shall exonerate<n id="3" /> the innocent but condemn<n id="4" /> the guilty.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Today the <sc>Lordsc> your God is commanding you to keep these statutes and ordinances, something you must do with all your heart and soul.<n id="1" />

Today you have declared the <sc>Lordsc> to be your God, and that you will walk in his ways, keep his statutes, commandments, and ordinances, and obey him.

<p class="poetry">As for the Rock,<n id="1" /> his work is perfect,p> <p class="poetry">for all his ways are just.p> <p class="poetry">He is a reliable God who is never unjust,p> <p class="poetry">he is fair<n id="2" /> and upright.p>

<p class="poetry">He has selected the best part for himself,p> <p class="poetry">for the portion of the ruler<n id="1" /> is set aside<n id="2" /> there;p> <p class="poetry">he came with the leaders<n id="3" /> of the people,p> <p class="poetry">he obeyed the righteous laws of the <sc>Lordsc>p> <p class="poetry">and his ordinances with Israel.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now, Israel, pay attention to the statutes and ordinances<n id="1" /> I am about to teach you, so that you might live and go on to enter and take possession of the land that the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of your ancestors,<n id="2" /> is giving you.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then Moses called all the people of Israel together and said to them:<n id="1" /> &#8220;Listen, Israel, to the statutes and ordinances that I am about to deliver to you today; learn them and be careful to keep them!

But as for you, remain here with me so I can declare to you all the commandments,<n id="1" /> statutes, and ordinances that you are to teach them, so that they can carry them out in the land I am about to give them.&#8221;<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">If you obey these ordinances and are careful to do them, the <sc>Lordsc> your God will faithfully keep covenant with you<n id="1" /> as he promised<n id="2" /> your ancestors.

<t /><p class="bodytext">These are the statutes and ordinances you must be careful to obey as long as you live in the land the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of your ancestors,<n id="1" /> has given you to possess.<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">If a matter is too difficult for you to judge &#8211; bloodshed,<n id="1" /> legal claim,<n id="2" /> or assault<n id="3" /> &#8211; matters of controversy in your villages<n id="4" /> &#8211; you must leave there and go up to the place the <sc>Lordsc> your God chooses.<n id="5" />

You must do what you are instructed, and the verdict they pronounce to you, without fail. Do not deviate right or left from what they tell you.

Otherwise the blood avenger will chase after the killer in the heat of his anger, eventually overtake him,<n id="1" /> and kill him,<n id="2" /> though this is not a capital case<n id="3" /> since he did not hate him at the time of the accident.

Rather, he must acknowledge the son of the less loved<n id="1" /> wife as firstborn and give him the double portion<n id="2" /> of all he has, for that son is the beginning of his father&#8217;s procreative power<n id="3" /> &#8211; to him should go the right of the firstborn.p>

What<n id="1" /> I am commanding you today is to love the <sc>Lordsc> your God, to walk in his ways, and to obey his commandments, his statutes, and his ordinances. Then you will live and become numerous and the <sc>Lordsc> your God will bless you in the land which you are about to possess.<n id="2" />
