and Asa went out to oppose him. They deployed for battle in the Valley of Zephathah near Mareshah.p>

Jehoshaphat was afraid, so he decided to seek the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s advice.<n id="1" /> He decreed that all Judah should observe a fast.

<p class="bodytext">Jehoshaphat stood before the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem<n id="1" /> at the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s temple, in front of the new courtyard.

<p class="bodytext">All the men of Judah<n id="1" /> were standing before the <sc>Lordsc>, along with their infants, wives, and children.

So the soldiers released the captives and the plunder before the officials and the entire assembly.

Finally they brought the goats for the sin offering before the king and the assembly, and they placed their hands on them.

<p class="bodytext">This is what Hezekiah did throughout Judah. He did what the <sc>Lordsc> his God considered good and right and faithful.

When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had invaded and intended to attack Jerusalem,<n id="1" />

He did evil in the sight of<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc> and committed the same horrible sins practiced by the nations<n id="2" /> whom the <sc>Lordsc> drove out ahead of the Israelites.

He did not humble himself before the <sc>Lordsc> as his father Manasseh had done.<n id="1" /> Amon was guilty of great sin.<n id="2" />

He did evil in the sight of<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc> his God. He did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s spokesman.

and Asa and his army chased them as far as Gerar. The Cushites were wiped out;<n id="1" /> they were shattered before the <sc>Lordsc> and his army. The men of Judah<n id="2" /> carried off a huge amount of plunder.

the prophet<n id="1" /> Jehu son of Hanani confronted him;<n id="2" /> he said to King Jehoshaphat, &#8220;Is it right to help the wicked and be an ally of those who oppose the <sc>Lordsc>?<n id="3" /> Because you have done this the <sc>Lordsc> is angry with you!<n id="4" />

&#8216;If disaster comes on us in the form of military attack,<n id="1" /> judgment, plague, or famine, we will stand in front of this temple before you, for you are present in this temple.<n id="2" /> We will cry out to you for help in our distress, so that you will<n id="3" /> hear and deliver us.&#8217;

For if you return to the <sc>Lordsc>, your brothers and sons will be shown mercy by their captors and return to this land. The <sc>Lordsc> your God is merciful and compassionate; he will not reject you<n id="1" /> if you return to him.&#8221;p>

He ordered the altars of the Baals to be torn down,<n id="1" /> and broke the incense altars that were above them. He smashed the Asherah poles, idols and images, crushed them up and sprinkled the dust over the tombs of those who had sacrificed to them.

But the bronze altar made by Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, was in front of the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s tabernacle.<n id="1" /> Solomon and the entire assembly prayed to him<n id="2" /> there.)

Solomon went up to the bronze altar before the <sc>Lordsc> which was at the meeting tent, and he offered up a thousand burnt sacrifices.p>

Now give me wisdom and discernment so<n id="1" /> I can effectively lead this nation.<n id="2" /> Otherwise<n id="3" /> no one is able<n id="4" /> to make judicial decisions for<n id="5" /> this great nation of yours.&#8221;<n id="6" />p>
