<p class="poetry">For the arrows<n id="1" /> of the Almighty<n id="2" /> are within me;p> <p class="poetry">my spirit<n id="3" /> drinks their poison;<n id="4" />p> <p class="poetry">God&#8217;s sudden terrors<n id="5" /> are arrayed<n id="6" /> against me.p>

<p class="poetry">But<n id="1" /> the tents of robbers are peaceful,p> <p class="poetry">and those who provoke God are confident<n id="2" /> &#8211;p> <p class="poetry">who carry their god in their hands.<n id="3" />p>

<p class="poetry">in whose hand<n id="1" /> is the life<n id="2" /> of every creaturep> <p class="poetry">and the breath of all the human race.<n id="3" />p>

<p class="poetry">he lived in ruined towns<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">and in houses where<n id="2" /> no one lives,p> <p class="poetry">where they are ready to crumble into heaps.<n id="3" />p>

<p class="poetry">whom I will see for myself,<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">and whom my own eyes will behold,p> <p class="poetry">and not another.<n id="2" />p> <p class="poetry">My heart<n id="3" /> grows faint within me.<n id="4" />p>

<p class="poetry">I will teach you<n id="1" /> about the power<n id="2" /> of God;p> <p class="poetry">What is on the Almighty&#8217;s mind<n id="3" /> I will not conceal.p>

<p class="poetry">I chose<n id="1" /> the way for them<n id="2" />p> <p class="poetry">and sat as their chief;<n id="3" />p> <p class="poetry">I lived like a king among his troops;p> <p class="poetry">I was like one who comforts mourners.<n id="4" />p>

With Job&#8217;s<n id="1" /> three friends he was also angry, because they could not find<n id="2" /> an answer, and so declared Job guilty.<n id="3" />

<p class="poetry">because they have turned away from following him,p> <p class="poetry">and have not understood<n id="1" /> any of his ways,p>

<p class="poetry">The clouds<n id="1" /> go round in circles,p> <p class="poetry">wheeling about according to his plans,p> <p class="poetry">to carry out<n id="2" /> all that he commands themp> <p class="poetry">over the face of the whole inhabited world.p>

<t /><p class="poetry">&#8220;Look now at Behemoth,<n id="2" /> which I made as<n id="3" /> I made you;p> <p class="poetry">it eats grass like the ox.p>

Have you<n id="1" /> not made a hedge<n id="2" /> around him and his household and all that he has on every side? You have blessed<n id="3" /> the work of his hands, and his livestock<n id="4" /> have increased<n id="5" /> in the land.

But<n id="1" /> extend your hand and strike<n id="2" /> everything he has, and he will no doubt<n id="3" /> curse you<n id="4" /> to your face!&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">But<n id="1" /> Satan answered the <sc>Lordsc>, &#8220;Skin for<n id="2" /> skin!<n id="3" /> Indeed, a man will give up<n id="4" /> all that he has to save his life!<n id="5" />

<t /><p class="poetry">&#8220;But now they mock me, those who are younger<n id="1" /> than I,p> <p class="poetry">whose fathers I disdained too much<n id="2" />p> <p class="poetry">to put with my sheep dogs.<n id="3" />p>

<p class="poetry">who shows no partiality to princes,p> <p class="poetry">and does not take note of<n id="1" /> the rich more than the poor,p> <p class="poetry">because all of them are the work of his hands?p>

<p class="bodytext">So they went, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, and did just as the <sc>Lordsc> had told them; and the <sc>Lordsc> had respect for Job.<n id="1" />p>

<p class="bodytext">So the <sc>Lordsc><n id="1" /> restored what Job had lost<n id="2" /> after he prayed for his friends,<n id="3" /> and the <sc>Lordsc> doubled<n id="4" /> all that had belonged to Job.

<p class="bodytext">So the <sc>Lordsc> said to Satan, &#8220;All right then,<n id="1" /> everything he has is<n id="2" /> in your power.<n id="3" /> Only do not extend your hand against the man himself!&#8221;<n id="4" /> So Satan went out<n id="5" /> from the presence of the <sc>Lordsc>.<n id="6" />p>

So they came to him, all his brothers and sisters and all who had known him before, and they dined<n id="1" /> with him in his house. They comforted him and consoled him for all the trouble the <sc>Lordsc> had brought on him, and each one gave him a piece of silver<n id="2" /> and a gold ring.<n id="3" />p>
