In spite of this, however, when they are in the land of their enemies I will not reject them and abhor them to make a complete end of them, to break my covenant with them, for I am the <sc>Lordsc> their God.

You must tear down their altars, shatter their sacred pillars,<n id="1" /> burn up their sacred Asherah poles,<n id="2" /> and cut down the images of their gods; you must eliminate their very memory from that place.

or associate with these nations that remain near<n id="1" /> you. You must not invoke or make solemn declarations by the names of their gods!<n id="2" /> You must not worship<n id="3" /> or bow down to them!

<t /><p class="bodytext">The Israelites did evil in the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s sight.<n id="1" /> They forgot the <sc>Lordsc> their God and worshiped the Baals and the Asherahs.<n id="2" />

The Israelites did not remain true<n id="1" /> to the <sc>Lordsc> their God, who had delivered them from all the enemies who lived around them.

They went out to the field, harvested their grapes,<n id="1" /> squeezed out the juice,<n id="2" /> and celebrated. They came to the temple<n id="3" /> of their god and ate, drank, and cursed Abimelech.

<t /><p class="bodytext">The rulers of the Philistines gathered to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to celebrate. They said, &#8220;Our god has handed Samson, our enemy, over to us.&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;But they forgot the <sc>Lordsc> their God, so he gave<n id="1" /> them into the hand of Sisera, the general in command of Hazor&#8217;s<n id="2" /> army,<n id="3" /> and into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.

Judah also failed to keep the commandments of the <sc>Lordsc> their God; they followed Israel&#8217;s example.<n id="1" />

They were worshiping<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc> and at the same time serving their own gods in accordance with the practices of the nations from which they had been deported.p>

They have burned the gods of the nations,<n id="1" /> for they are not really gods, but only the product of human hands manufactured from wood and stone. That is why the Assyrians could destroy them.<n id="2" />

Then the Levites &#8211; Jeshua, Binnui,<n id="1" /> Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Kenani &#8211; stood on the steps and called out loudly<n id="2" /> to the <sc>LORDsc> their God.

<p class="poetry">&#8220;A noise is heard on the hilltops.p> <p class="poetry">It is the sound of the people of Israel crying and pleading to their gods.p> <p class="poetry">Indeed they have followed sinful ways;<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">they have forgotten to be true to the <sc>Lordsc> their God.<n id="2" />p>

<p class="poetry">I thought, &#8220;Surely it is only the ignorant poor who act this way.<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">They act like fools because they do not know what the <sc>Lordsc> demands.<n id="2" />p> <p class="poetry">They do not know what their God requires of them.<n id="3" />p>

Then they will know that I, the <sc>Lordsc> their God, am with them,<n id="1" /> and that they are my people, the house of Israel, declares the sovereign <sc>Lordsc>.<n id="2" />

Then they will know that I am the <sc>Lordsc> their God, because I sent them into exile among the nations, and then gathered them into their own land. I will not leave any of them in exile<n id="1" /> any longer.

He will also take their gods into captivity to Egypt, along with their cast images and prized utensils of silver and gold. Then he will withdraw for some years from<n id="1" /> the king of the north.

But I will have pity on the nation<n id="1" /> of Judah.<n id="2" /> I will deliver them by the <sc>Lordsc> their God; I will not deliver them by the warrior&#8217;s bow, by sword, by military victory,<n id="3" /> by chariot horses, or by chariots.&#8221;<n id="4" />p>

Afterward, the Israelites will turn and seek the <sc>Lordsc> their God and their Davidic king.<n id="1" /> Then they will submit to the <sc>Lordsc> in fear and receive his blessings<n id="2" /> in the future.<n id="3" />p>
