<t /><p class="bodytext">So Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the realm of King Sihon of the Amorites, and the realm of King Og of Bashan, the entire land with its cities and the territory surrounding them.<n id="1" />

But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land before you, then those whom you allow to remain will be irritants in your eyes and thorns in your side, and will cause you trouble in the land where you will be living.

&#8220;Give these instructions<n id="1" /> to the Israelites, and tell them: &#8216;When you enter Canaan, the land that has been assigned to you as an inheritance,<n id="2" /> the land of Canaan with its borders,

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;You must not pollute the land where you live, for blood defiles the land, and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed there, except by the blood of the person who shed it.

These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to investigate the land. And Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.<n id="1" />p>

and see<n id="1" /> what the land is like,<n id="2" /> and whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, few or many,

They told Moses,<n id="1" /> &#8220;We went to the land where you sent us.<n id="2" /> It is indeed flowing with milk and honey,<n id="3" /> and this is its fruit.

Why has the <sc>Lordsc> brought us into this land only to be killed by the sword, that our wives and our children should become plunder? Wouldn&#8217;t it be better for us to return to Egypt?&#8221;

If the <sc>Lordsc> delights in us, then he will bring us into this land and give it to us &#8211; a land that is flowing with milk and honey.<n id="1" />

&#8216;Because the <sc>Lordsc> was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to them, he killed them in the wilderness.&#8217;

Only my servant Caleb, because he had a different spirit and has followed me fully &#8211; I will bring him into the land where he had gone, and his descendants<n id="1" /> will possess it.

But I will bring in your little ones, whom you said would become victims of war,<n id="1" /> and they will enjoy<n id="2" /> the land that you have despised.

But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among<n id="1" /> the men who went to investigate the land, lived.

&#8220;Speak to the Israelites and tell them, &#8216;When you enter the land to which I am bringing you<n id="1" />

and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, along with their households, and all Korah&#8217;s men, and all their goods.

They and all that they had went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed over them. So they perished from among the community.

&#8220;Look, a nation has come out<n id="1" /> of Egypt, and it covers the face of the earth. Come now and put a curse on them for me; perhaps I will be able to defeat them<n id="2" /> and drive them out.&#8221;<n id="3" />

The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and Korah at the time that company died, when the fire consumed 250 men. So they became a warning.

<t /><n id="1" /><p class="bodytext">Then the <sc>Lordsc> said to Moses, &#8220;Go up this mountain of the Abarim range,<n id="2" /> and see<n id="3" /> the land I have given<n id="4" /> to the Israelites.

So they said, &#8220;If we have found favor in your sight,<n id="1" /> let this land be given to your servants for our inheritance. Do not have us cross<n id="2" /> the Jordan River.&#8221;<n id="3" />p>
