Commission ¹  Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, because he will lead these people over and will enable them to inherit the land you will see.”

Look! I have taught you statutes and ordinances just as the Lord my God told me to do, so that you might carry them out in ¹  the land you are about to enter and possess.

So I must die here in this land; I will not cross the Jordan. But you are going over and will possess that ¹  good land.

From heaven he spoke to you in order to teach you, and on earth he showed you his great fire from which you also heard his words. ¹ 

Today realize and carefully consider that the Lord is God in heaven above and on earth below – there is no other!

Do whatever is proper ¹  and good before the Lord so that it may go well with you and that you may enter and occupy the good land that he ²  promised your ancestors,

He delivered us from there so that he could give us the land he had promised our ancestors.

Understand, therefore, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is about to give you this good land as a possession, for you are a stubborn ¹  people!

Then he ¹  said to me, “Get up, set out leading ²  the people so they may go and possess ³  the land I promised to give to their ancestors.” ⁴ 

so that your days and those of your descendants may be extended in the land which the Lord promised to give to your ancestors, like the days of heaven itself. ¹ 

For you are about to cross the Jordan to possess the land the Lord your God is giving you, and you will possess and inhabit it.

You must pursue justice alone ¹  so that you may live and inherit the land the Lord your God is giving you.

When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, you must not learn the abhorrent practices of those nations.

If the Lord your God enlarges your borders as he promised your ancestors ¹  and gives you all the land he pledged to them, ² 

When ¹  you enter the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you occupy it and live in it,

Then he brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.

“The Lord will allow you to be struck down before your enemies; you will attack them from one direction but flee from them in seven directions and will become an object of terror ¹  to all the kingdoms of the earth.

The Lord will raise up a distant nation against you, one from the other side of the earth ¹  as the eagle flies, ²  a nation whose language you will not understand,

Gather to me all your tribal elders and officials so I can speak to them directly about these things and call the heavens and the earth to witness against them.

Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ ¹  I have let you see it, ²  but you will not cross over there.”
