<t /><p class="bodytext">You are children<n id="1" /> of the <sc>Lordsc> your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave your forehead bald<n id="2" /> for the sake of the dead.

The rest of the people will hear and become afraid to keep doing such evil among you.

<p class="bodytext"><v id="(23:1)" /><n id="1" /> A man may not marry<n id="2" /> his father&#8217;s former<n id="3" /> wife and in this way dishonor his father.<n id="4" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">There must never be a sacred prostitute<n id="1" /> among the young women<n id="2" /> of Israel nor a sacred male prostitute<n id="3" /> among the young men<n id="4" /> of Israel.

<p class="bodytext">You must not pervert justice due a resident foreigner or an orphan, or take a widow&#8217;s garment as security for a loan.

You will plant vineyards and cultivate them, but you will not drink wine or gather in grapes, because worms will eat them.

You will bear sons and daughters but not keep them, because they will be taken into captivity.

Your life will hang in doubt before you; you will be terrified by night and day and will have no certainty of surviving from one day to the next.<n id="1" />

It is not with you alone that I am making this covenant by oath,

However, if you<n id="1" /> turn aside and do not obey, but are lured away to worship and serve other gods,

Moses was 120 years old when he died, but his eye was not dull<n id="1" /> nor had his vitality<n id="2" /> departed.

No prophet ever again arose in Israel like Moses, who knew the <sc>Lordsc> face to face.<n id="1" />

And when he<n id="1" /> sent you from Kadesh-Barnea and told you, &#8220;Go up and possess the land I have given you,&#8221; you rebelled against the <sc>Lordsc> your God<n id="2" /> and would neither believe nor obey him.

whenever a prophet speaks in my<n id="1" /> name and the prediction<n id="2" /> is not fulfilled,<n id="3" /> then I have<n id="4" /> not spoken it;<n id="5" /> the prophet has presumed to speak it, so you need not fear him.&#8221;p>

You must pay his wage that very day before the sun sets, for he is poor and his life depends on it. Otherwise he will cry out to the <sc>Lordsc> against you, and you will be guilty of sin.p>

I have not eaten anything when I was in mourning, or removed any of it while ceremonially unclean, or offered any of it to the dead;<n id="1" /> I have obeyed you<n id="2" /> and have done everything you have commanded me.

The <sc>Lordsc> will make you the head and not the tail, and you will always end up at the top and not at the bottom, if you obey his<n id="1" /> commandments which I am urging<n id="2" /> you today to be careful to do.

The whole land will be covered with brimstone, salt, and burning debris; it will not be planted nor will it sprout or produce grass. It will resemble the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the <sc>Lordsc> destroyed in his intense anger.<n id="1" />

and he<n id="1" /> delivers them over to you and you attack them, you must utterly annihilate<n id="2" /> them. Make no treaty<n id="3" /> with them and show them no mercy!

You must not bring any abhorrent thing into your house and thereby become an object of divine wrath<n id="1" /> along with it.<n id="2" /> You must absolutely detest<n id="3" /> and abhor it,<n id="4" /> for it is an object of divine wrath.p>
