<t /><p class="bodytext">David and the whole Israelite army<n id="1" /> advanced to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus).<n id="2" /> (The Jebusites, the land&#8217;s original inhabitants, lived there.)<n id="3" />

The priests and Levites consecrated themselves so they could bring up the ark of the <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel.

He then handed out to each Israelite man and woman a loaf of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake.

<t /><p class="bodytext">David reigned over all Israel; he guaranteed justice for all his people.<n id="1" />

When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of Shimea,<n id="1" /> David&#8217;s brother, killed him.p>

<p class="bodytext">But the king&#8217;s edict stood, despite Joab&#8217;s objections.<n id="1" /> So Joab left and traveled throughout Israel before returning to Jerusalem.<n id="2" />

God was also offended by it,<n id="1" /> so he attacked Israel.p>

<p class="bodytext">He summoned his son Solomon and charged him to build a temple for the <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel.

<t /><p class="bodytext">When David was old and approaching the end of his life,<n id="1" /> he made his son Solomon king over Israel.p>

For David said, &#8220;The <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel has given his people rest and has permanently settled in Jerusalem.<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">As for the Izharites: Kenaniah and his sons were given responsibilities outside the temple<n id="1" /> as officers and judges over Israel.p>

<p class="bodytext">The leaders of the families, the leaders of the Israelite tribes, the commanders of units of a thousand and a hundred, and the supervisors of the king&#8217;s work contributed willingly.

<t /><p class="bodytext">The sons of Reuben, Israel&#8217;s firstborn &#8211;p> <p class="bodytext">(Now he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father&#8217;s bed,<n id="1" /> his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph, Israel&#8217;s son. So Reuben is not listed as firstborn in the genealogical records.<n id="2" />

When all the leaders<n id="1" /> of Israel came to the king at Hebron, David made an agreement<n id="2" /> with them in Hebron before the <sc>Lordsc>. They anointed<n id="3" /> David king over Israel, just as the <sc>Lordsc> had announced through Samuel.<n id="4" />p>

<p class="bodytext">All these men were warriors who were ready to march.<n id="1" /> They came to Hebron to make David king over all Israel by acclamation;<n id="2" /> all the rest of the Israelites also were in agreement that David should become king.<n id="3" />

David said to the whole Israelite assembly, &#8220;If you so desire and the <sc>Lordsc> our God approves,<n id="1" /> let&#8217;s spread the word<n id="2" /> to our brothers who remain in all the regions of Israel, and to the priests and Levites in their cities,<n id="3" /> so they may join us.

Wherever I moved throughout Israel, I did not say<n id="1" /> to any of the leaders whom I appointed to care for my people Israel,<n id="2" /> &#8216;Why have you not built me a house made from cedar?&#8217;&#8221;&#8217;p>

The <sc>Lordsc> greatly magnified Solomon before all Israel and bestowed on him greater majesty than any king of Israel before him.<n id="1" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">These were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king ruled over the Israelites:p> <p class="bodytext">Bela son of Beor; the name of his city was Dinhabah.p>

<p class="bodytext">From Issachar there were 200 leaders and all their relatives at their command &#8211; they understood the times and knew what Israel should do.<n id="1" />p>
