So he had them stay with the king of Moab; they stayed with him the whole time ¹  that David was in the stronghold.

David realized ¹  that Saul had come out to seek his life; at that time David was in Horesh in the desert of Ziph.

When the two of them had made a covenant before the Lord, David stayed on at Horesh, but Jonathan went to his house.

David had also married ¹  Ahinoam from Jezreel; the two of them became his wives.

When Saul learned that David had fled to Gath, he did not mount a new search for him.

So turn and leave ¹  in peace. You must not do anything that the leaders of the Philistines consider improper!” ² 

So the Lord graciously attended to Hannah, and she was able to conceive and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. The boy Samuel grew up at the Lord’s sanctuary. ¹ 

Now the boy Samuel continued serving the Lord under Eli’s supervision. ¹  Word from the Lord was rare in those days; revelatory visions were infrequent.

Then he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But Eli ¹  said, “I didn’t call you. Go back and lie down.” So he went back and lay down.

(For this reason, to this very day, neither Dagon’s priests nor anyone else who enters Dagon’s temple step on Dagon’s threshold in Ashdod.)

So they inquired again of the Lord, “Has the man arrived here yet?” The Lord said, “He has hidden himself among the equipment.” ¹ 

But Saul said, “No one will be killed on this day. For today the Lord has given Israel a victory!”

I thought, ¹  ‘Now the Philistines will come down on me at Gilgal and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.’ So I felt obligated ²  to offer the burnt offering.”

His armor bearer said to him, “Do everything that is on your mind. ¹  Do as you’re inclined. I’m with you all the way!” ²
