<p class="bodytext">That is why<n id="1" /> a man leaves<n id="2" /> his father and mother and unites with<n id="3" /> his wife, and they become a new family.<n id="4" />

Isaac said to his father Abraham,<n id="1" /> &#8220;My father?&#8221; &#8220;What is it,<n id="2" /> my son?&#8221; he replied. &#8220;Here is the fire and the wood,&#8221; Isaac said,<n id="3" /> &#8220;but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?&#8221;

So Jacob went over to his father Isaac, who felt him and said, &#8220;The voice is Jacob&#8217;s, but the hands are Esau&#8217;s.&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">When Esau heard<n id="1" /> his father&#8217;s words, he wailed loudly and bitterly.<n id="2" /> He said to his father, &#8220;Bless me too, my father!&#8221;

Esau said to his father, &#8220;Do you have only that one blessing, my father? Bless me too!&#8221;<n id="1" /> Then Esau wept loudly.<n id="2" />p>

<p class="bodytext">So his father Isaac said to him,p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;Indeed,<n id="1" /> your home will bep> <p class="poetry">away from the richness<n id="2" /> of the earth,p> <p class="poetry">and away from the dew of the sky above.p>

May the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor,<n id="1" /> the gods of their father, judge between us.&#8221; Jacob took an oath by the God whom his father Isaac feared.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">Jacob&#8217;s sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully when they spoke because Shechem<n id="1" /> had violated their sister Dinah.

The young man did not delay in doing what they asked<n id="1" /> because he wanted Jacob&#8217;s daughter Dinah<n id="2" /> badly. (Now he was more important<n id="3" /> than anyone in his father&#8217;s household.)<n id="4" />

<p class="bodytext">So Jacob came back to his father Isaac in Mamre,<n id="1" /> to Kiriath Arba<n id="2" /> (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">These were the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah (who discovered the hot springs<n id="1" /> in the wilderness as he pastured the donkeys of his father Zibeon).p>

All his sons and daughters stood by<n id="1" /> him to console him, but he refused to be consoled. &#8220;No,&#8221; he said, &#8220;I will go to the grave mourning my son.&#8221;<n id="2" /> So Joseph&#8217;s<n id="3" /> father wept for him.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">So Israel began his journey, taking with him all that he had.<n id="1" /> When he came to Beer Sheba<n id="2" /> he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

Joseph harnessed his chariot and went up to meet his father Israel in Goshen. When he met him,<n id="1" /> he hugged his neck and wept on his neck for quite some time.p>

<p class="bodytext">So Joseph settled his father and his brothers. He gave them territory<n id="1" /> in the land of Egypt, in the best region of the land, the land of Rameses,<n id="2" /> just as Pharaoh had commanded.

Joseph said to his father, &#8220;They are the<n id="1" /> sons God has given me in this place.&#8221; His father<n id="2" /> said, &#8220;Bring them to me so I may bless them.&#8221;<n id="3" />

Joseph said to his father, &#8220;Not so, my father, for this is the firstborn. Put your right hand on his head.&#8221;p>

Joseph instructed the physicians in his service<n id="1" /> to embalm his father, so the physicians embalmed Israel.

<p class="bodytext">So Joseph went up to bury his father; all Pharaoh&#8217;s officials went with him &#8211; the senior courtiers<n id="1" /> of his household, all the senior officials of the land of Egypt,

all Joseph&#8217;s household, his brothers, and his father&#8217;s household. But they left their little children and their flocks and herds in the land of Goshen.
