<p class="bodytext">So the army<n id="1" /> sent to Shiloh, and they took from there the ark of the covenant of the <sc>Lordsc> of hosts who sits between the cherubim. Now the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phineas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

After they had assembled at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the <sc>Lordsc>. They fasted on that day, and they confessed<n id="1" /> there, &#8220;We have sinned against the <sc>Lordsc>.&#8221; So Samuel led<n id="2" /> the people of Israel at Mizpah.p>

He said to the Israelites, &#8220;This is what the <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel says, &#8216;I brought Israel up from Egypt and I delivered you from the power<n id="1" /> of the Egyptians and from the power of all the kingdoms that oppressed you.

<p class="bodytext">Then he said to all Israel, &#8220;You will be on one side, and I and my son Jonathan will be on the other side.&#8221; The army replied to Saul, &#8220;Do whatever you think is best.&#8221;p>

Saul said to the Kenites, &#8220;Go on and leave! Go down from among the Amalekites! Otherwise I will sweep you away<n id="1" /> with them! After all, you were kind to all the Israelites when they came up from Egypt.&#8221; So the Kenites withdrew from among the Amalekites.p>

Jesse&#8217;s three oldest sons had followed Saul to war. The names of the<n id="1" /> three sons who went to war were Eliab, his firstborn, Abinadab, the second oldest, and Shammah, the third oldest.

Saul said to his servants who were stationed around him, &#8220;Listen up, you Benjaminites! Is Jesse&#8217;s son giving fields and vineyards to all of you? Or is he making all of you<n id="1" /> commanders and officers?<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">When David finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, &#8220;Is that your voice, my son David?&#8221; Then Saul wept loudly.<n id="1" />

This failure on your part isn&#8217;t good!<n id="1" /> As surely as the <sc>Lordsc> lives, you people who have not protected your lord, the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s chosen one, are as good as dead!<n id="2" /> Now look where the king&#8217;s spear and the jug of water that was by his head are!&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">Saul replied, &#8220;I have sinned. Come back, my son David. I won&#8217;t harm you, for you treated my life with value<n id="1" /> this day. I have behaved foolishly and have made a very terrible mistake!&#8221;<n id="2" />

Saul replied to David, &#8220;May you be rewarded,<n id="1" /> my son David! You will without question be successful!&#8221;<n id="2" /> So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.p>

So let my lord the king now listen to the words of his servant. If the <sc>Lordsc> has incited you against me, may he take delight in<n id="1" /> an offering. But if men have instigated this,<n id="2" /> may they be cursed before the <sc>Lordsc>! For they have driven me away this day from being united with the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s inheritance, saying, &#8216;Go on, serve other gods!&#8217;
