In that day you will cry out because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord won’t answer you in that day.” ¹ 

David was going back and forth ¹  from Saul in order to care for his father’s sheep in Bethlehem.

When David heard in the desert that Nabal was shearing his sheep,

Then the Lord again appeared in Shiloh, for it was in Shiloh that the Lord had revealed himself to Samuel ¹  through the word of the Lord. ² 

When the leaders of the Philistines were passing in review at the head of their units of hundreds and thousands, ¹  David and his men were passing in review in the rear with Achish.

¹ The Philistines gathered their troops ²  for battle. They assembled at Socoh in Judah. They camped in Ephes Dammim, between Socoh and Azekah.

Now look, I realize that you will in fact be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hand.

David said to Achish, “If I have found favor with you, let me be given a place in one of the country towns so that I can live there. Why should your servant settle in the royal city with you?”

In this initial skirmish Jonathan and his armor bearer struck down about twenty men in an area that measured half an acre.

When the ark of the Lord had been in the land ¹  of the Philistines for seven months, ² 

and Hebron; and for those in whatever other places David and his men had traveled.

So they left and went to Ziph ahead of Saul. Now David and his men were in the desert of Maon, in the Arabah to the south of Jeshimon.

Then Samuel went to Ramah, while Saul went up to his home in Gibeah of Saul.

The men of Israel realized they had a problem because their army was hard pressed. So the army hid in caves, thickets, cliffs, strongholds, ¹  and cisterns.

He said, “Here are the policies of the king who will rule over you: He will conscript your sons and put them in his chariot forces and in his cavalry; they will run in front of his chariot.

So get up early in the morning along with the servants of your lord who have come with you. ¹  When you get up early in the morning, as soon as it is light enough to see, leave.” ² 

¹ The Philistine kept coming closer to David, with his shield bearer walking in front of him.

The Philistines assembled all their troops ¹  at Aphek, while Israel camped at the spring that is in Jezreel.

Then Samuel said, “Does the Lord take pleasure in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as he does in obedience? ¹  Certainly, ²  obedience ³  is better than sacrifice; paying attention is better than ⁴  the fat of rams.

David said to Saul, “Who am I? Who are my relatives or the clan of my father ¹  in Israel that I should become the king’s son-in-law?”
