(Now ¹  all the people who heard this, even the tax collectors, ²  acknowledged ³  God’s justice, because they had been baptized ⁴  with John’s baptism.

For nothing is hidden ¹  that will not be revealed, ²  and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light.

But Jesus, ¹  realizing their thoughts, said to them, ²  “Every kingdom divided against itself is destroyed, ³  and a divided household falls. ⁴ 

Woe to you! ¹  You are like unmarked graves, and people ²  walk over them without realizing it!” ³ 

But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief ¹  was coming, he would not have let ²  his house be broken into.

That ¹  servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or do what his master asked ²  will receive a severe beating.

But ¹  he will reply, ²  ‘I don’t know where you come from! ³  Go away from me, all you evildoers!’ ⁴ 

You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’” ¹ 

saying, “If you had only known on this day, ¹  even you, the things that make for peace! ²  But now they are hidden ³  from your eyes.

Jesus replied, ¹  “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow ²  today until you have denied ³  three times that you know me.”

But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” At that moment, ¹  while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. ² 

[But Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”] ¹  Then ²  they threw dice ³  to divide his clothes. ⁴ 

Then they told what had happened on the road, ¹  and how they recognized him ²  when he broke the bread.

Jesus ¹  said to them, “No doubt you will quote to me the proverb, ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ ²  and say, ‘What we have heard that you did in Capernaum, ³  do here in your hometown too.’”

Demons also came out ¹  of many, crying out, ²  “You are the Son of God!” ³  But he rebuked ⁴  them, and would not allow them to speak, ⁵  because they knew that he was the Christ. ⁶ 

For I tell you that many prophets and kings longed to see ¹  what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

The king ¹  said to him, ‘I will judge you by your own words, ²  you wicked slave! ³  So you knew, did you, that I was a severe ⁴  man, withdrawing what I didn’t deposit and reaping what I didn’t sow?

They ¹  began to accuse ²  him, saying, “We found this man subverting ³  our nation, forbidding ⁴  us to pay the tribute tax ⁵  to Caesar ⁶  and claiming that he himself is Christ, ⁷  a king.”

And he will go as forerunner before the Lord ¹  in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, ²  to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.”

Then ¹  as the men ²  were starting to leave, ³  Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us make three shelters, ⁴  one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah” – not knowing what he was saying.
