You must not shed innocent blood ¹  in your land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, for that would make you guilty. ² 

Be on guard so that you do not forget the covenant of the Lord your God that he has made with you, and that you do not make an image of any kind, just as he ¹  has forbidden ²  you.

Keep his statutes and commandments that I am setting forth ¹  today so that it may go well with you and your descendants and that you may enjoy longevity in the land that the Lord your God is about to give you as a permanent possession.

So on that day Moses wrote down this song and taught it to the Israelites,

“Therefore, keep the terms ¹  of this covenant and obey them so that you may be successful in everything you do.

Then the elders of the city nearest to the corpse ¹  must take from the herd a heifer that has not been worked – that has never pulled with the yoke –

It is not with you alone that I am making this covenant by oath,

Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt; therefore, I am commanding you to do all this.

But the Lord became angry with me because of you and vowed that I would never cross the Jordan nor enter the good land that he ¹  is about to give you. ² 

Today I invoke heaven and earth as a witness against you that I have set life and death, blessing and curse, before you. Therefore choose life so that you and your descendants may live!

Be certain to keep all the statutes and ordinances that I am presenting to you today.

if you carefully obey ¹  him ²  by keeping ³  all these commandments that I am giving ⁴  you today.

You must obey him ¹  and keep his commandments and statutes that I am giving you today.”

Honor ¹  your father and your mother just as the Lord your God has commanded you to do, so that your days may be extended and that it may go well with you in the land that he ²  is about to give you.

Today he will affirm that you are his people and that he is your God, ¹  just as he promised you and as he swore by oath to your ancestors ²  Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

I also said to you at that time, “I am no longer able to sustain you by myself.

Be keenly aware that just as a parent disciplines his child, ¹  the Lord your God disciplines you.

Furthermore, remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and so be careful to observe these statutes.

So he humbled you by making you hungry and then feeding you with unfamiliar manna. ¹  He did this to teach you ²  that humankind ³  cannot live by bread ⁴  alone, but also by everything that comes from the Lord’s mouth. ⁵ 

At that time ¹  my anger will erupt against them ²  and I will abandon them and hide my face from them until they are devoured. Many disasters and distresses will overcome ³  them ⁴  so that they ⁵  will say at that time, ‘Have not these disasters ⁶  overcome us ⁷  because our ⁸  God is not among us ⁹ ?’
