Look, we have investigated this, so it is true. Hear it, ¹  and apply it for your own ²  good.” ³ 

After this Job lived 140 years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation.

Take heed, do not turn to evil, for because of this you have been tested ¹  by affliction.

For, when I think ¹  about this, I am terrified ²  and my body feels a shudder. ³ 

then this ¹  also would be iniquity to be judged, ²  for I would have been false ³  to God above.

And he reveals ¹  this ²  for correction, and says that they must turn ³  from evil.

you asked, ¹  ‘Who is this who darkens counsel without knowledge?’ But ²  I have declared without understanding ³  things too wonderful for me to know. ⁴ 

“Reconcile yourself ¹  with God, ²  and be at peace ³  with him; in this way your prosperity will be good.

“If this is not so, who can prove me a liar and reduce my words to nothing?” ¹ 

‘Surely such is the residence ¹  of an evil man; and this is the place of one who has not known God.’” ² 

While this one was still speaking another messenger arrived and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,

Is it your opinion ¹  that God ²  should recompense it, because you reject this? ³  But you must choose, and not I, so tell us what you know.

But he replied, ¹  “You’re talking like one of the godless ²  women would do! Should we receive ³  what is good from God, and not also ⁴  receive ⁵  what is evil?” ⁶  In all this Job did not sin by what he said. ⁷ 

When Job’s three friends heard about all this calamity that had happened to him, each of them came from his own country ²  – Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. ³  They met together ⁴  to come to show sympathy ⁵  for him and to console ⁶  him.

When ¹  the days of their feasting were finished, ²  Job would send ³  for them and sanctify ⁴  them; he would get up early ⁵  in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to ⁶  the number of them all. For Job thought, “Perhaps ⁷  my children ⁸  have sinned and cursed ⁹  God in their hearts.” This was Job’s customary practice.

While this one was still speaking, ¹  another messenger arrived ²  and said, “The fire of God ³  has fallen from heaven ⁴  and has burned up the sheep and the servants – it has consumed them! And I – only I alone – escaped to tell you!”

While this one was still speaking another messenger arrived and said, “The Chaldeans ¹  formed three bands and made a raid ²  on the camels and carried them all away, and they killed the servants with the sword! ³  And I – only I alone – escaped to tell you!”

“Surely you know ¹  that it has been from old, ever since humankind was placed ²  on the earth,

Such is the lot God allots the wicked, and the heritage of his appointment ¹  from God.”
