<p class="poetry">Is this how you repay<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc>,p> <p class="poetry">you foolish, unwise people?p> <p class="poetry">Is he not your father, your creator?p> <p class="poetry">He has made you and established you.p>

However, it was not until<n id="1" /> the first day of the eleventh month<n id="2" /> of the fortieth year<n id="3" /> that Moses addressed the Israelites just as<n id="4" /> the <sc>Lordsc> had instructed him to do.

All along the way I, the <sc>Lordsc> your God,<n id="1" /> have blessed your every effort.<n id="2" /> I have<n id="3" /> been attentive to<n id="4" /> your travels through this great wasteland. These forty years I have<n id="5" /> been with you; you have lacked for nothing.&#8217;&#8221;p>

Honor<n id="1" /> your father and your mother just as the <sc>Lordsc> your God has commanded you to do, so that your days may be extended and that it may go well with you in the land that he<n id="2" /> is about to give you.

and that you may so revere the <sc>Lordsc> your God that you will keep all his statutes and commandments<n id="1" /> that I am giving<n id="2" /> you &#8211; you, your children, and your grandchildren &#8211; all your lives, to prolong your days.

and you must teach<n id="1" /> them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road,<n id="2" /> as you lie down, and as you get up.

He,<n id="1" /> the God who leads you, will expel the nations little by little. You will not be allowed to destroy them all at once lest the wild animals overrun you.

<t /><p class="bodytext">You must keep carefully all these commandments<n id="1" /> I am giving<n id="2" /> you today so that you may live, increase in number,<n id="3" /> and go in and occupy the land that the <sc>Lordsc> promised to your ancestors.<n id="4" />

And there you must take your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the personal offerings you have prepared,<n id="1" /> your votive offerings, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks.

Both you and your families<n id="1" /> must feast there before the <sc>Lordsc> your God and rejoice in all the output of your labor with which he<n id="2" /> has blessed you.

When you do go across the Jordan River<n id="1" /> and settle in the land he<n id="2" /> is granting you as an inheritance and you find relief from all the enemies who surround you, you will live in safety.<n id="3" />

When he<n id="1" /> blesses you, if the<n id="2" /> place where he chooses to locate his name is distant,

For the <sc>Lordsc> your God will bless you just as he has promised; you will lend to many nations but will not borrow from any, and you will rule over many nations but they will not rule over you.p>

You must by all means lend<n id="1" /> to him and not be upset by doing it,<n id="2" /> for because of this the <sc>Lordsc> your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you attempt.

There will never cease to be some poor people in the land; therefore, I am commanding you to make sure you open<n id="1" /> your hand to your fellow Israelites<n id="2" /> who are needy and poor in your land.p>

You must do what you are instructed, and the verdict they pronounce to you, without fail. Do not deviate right or left from what they tell you.

<t /><p class="bodytext">You must not encroach on your neighbor&#8217;s property,<n id="1" /> which will have been defined<n id="2" /> in the inheritance you will obtain in the land the <sc>Lordsc> your God is giving you.<n id="3" />p>

Do not blame<n id="1" /> your people Israel whom you redeemed, O <sc>Lordsc>, and do not hold them accountable for the bloodshed of an innocent person.&#8221;<n id="2" /> Then atonement will be made for the bloodshed.

for they did not meet you with food and water on the way as you came from Egypt, and furthermore, they hired<n id="1" /> Balaam son of Beor of Pethor in Aram Naharaim to curse you.

<p class="bodytext">Fathers must not be put to death for what their children<n id="1" /> do, nor children for what their fathers do; each must be put to death for his own sin.p>
