When all the land of Egypt experienced the famine, the people cried out to Pharaoh for food. Pharaoh said to all the people of Egypt,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Go to Joseph and do whatever he tells you.&#8221;p>

Now go up to my father quickly<n id="1" /> and tell him, &#8216;This is what your son Joseph says: &#8220;God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; do not delay!

The land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best region of the land. They may live in the land of Goshen. If you know of any highly capable men<n id="1" /> among them, put them in charge<n id="2" /> of my livestock.&#8221;p>

Joseph collected all the money that could be found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan as payment<n id="1" /> for the grain they were buying. Then Joseph brought the money into Pharaoh&#8217;s palace.<n id="2" />

When the money from the lands of Egypt and Canaan was used up, all the Egyptians<n id="1" /> came to Joseph and said, &#8220;Give us food! Why should we die<n id="2" /> before your very eyes because our money has run out?&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh. Each<n id="1" /> of the Egyptians sold his field, for the famine was severe.<n id="2" /> So the land became Pharaoh&#8217;s.

<p class="bodytext">So Joseph made it a statute,<n id="1" /> which is in effect<n id="2" /> to this day throughout the land of Egypt: One-fifth belongs to Pharaoh. Only the land of the priests did not become Pharaoh&#8217;s.p>

The time<n id="1" /> for Israel to die approached, so he called for his son Joseph and said to him, &#8220;If now I have found favor in your sight, put your hand under my thigh<n id="2" /> and show me kindness and faithfulness.<n id="3" /> Do not bury me in Egypt,

<t /><n id="1" /><p class="bodytext">During<n id="2" /> that long period of time<n id="3" /> the king of Egypt died, and the Israelites<n id="4" /> groaned because of the slave labor. They cried out, and their desperate cry<n id="5" /> because of their slave labor went up to God.

He replied,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Surely I will be with you,<n id="2" /> and this will be the sign<n id="3" /> to you that I have sent you: When you bring the people out of Egypt, you and they will serve<n id="4" /> God on this mountain.&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;Go and bring together<n id="1" /> the elders of Israel and tell them, &#8216;The <sc>Lordsc>, the God of your fathers,<n id="2" /> appeared<n id="3" /> to me &#8211; the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob &#8211; saying, &#8220;I have attended carefully<n id="4" /> to you and to what has been done<n id="5" /> to you in Egypt,

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;The elders<n id="1" /> will listen<n id="2" /> to you, and then you and the elders of Israel must go to the king of Egypt and tell him, &#8216;The <sc>Lordsc>, the God of the Hebrews, has met<n id="3" /> with us. So now, let us go<n id="4" /> three days&#8217; journey into the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice<n id="5" /> to the <sc>Lordsc> our God.&#8217;

<t /><n id="1" /><p class="bodytext">So Moses went back<n id="2" /> to his father-in-law Jethro and said to him, &#8220;Let me go, so that I may return<n id="3" /> to my relatives<n id="4" /> in Egypt and see<n id="5" /> if they are still alive.&#8221; Jethro said to Moses, &#8220;Go in peace.&#8221;

The <sc>Lordsc> said<n id="1" /> to Moses, &#8220;When you go back to Egypt,<n id="2" /> see that you<n id="3" /> do before Pharaoh all the wonders I have put under your control.<n id="4" /> But I will harden<n id="5" /> his heart<n id="6" /> and<n id="7" /> he will not let the people go.

Therefore, tell the Israelites, &#8216;I am the <sc>Lordsc>. I will bring you out<n id="1" /> from your enslavement to<n id="2" /> the Egyptians, I will rescue you from the hard labor they impose,<n id="3" /> and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.

<p class="bodytext">The <sc>Lordsc> spoke to Moses, &#8220;Tell Aaron, &#8216;Extend your hand with your staff<n id="1" /> over the rivers, over the canals, and over the ponds, and bring the frogs up over the land of Egypt.&#8217;&#8221;

<t /><n id="1" /><p class="bodytext">The <sc>Lordsc> said to Moses, &#8220;Tell Aaron, &#8216;Extend your staff and strike the dust of the ground, and it will become<n id="2" /> gnats<n id="3" /> throughout all the land of Egypt.&#8217;&#8221;

They did so; Aaron extended his hand with his staff, he struck the dust of the ground, and it became gnats on people<n id="1" /> and on animals. All the dust of the ground became gnats throughout all the land of Egypt.

When Moses extended<n id="1" /> his staff toward the sky, the <sc>Lordsc><n id="2" /> sent thunder<n id="3" /> and hail, and fire fell to the earth;<n id="4" /> so the <sc>Lordsc> caused hail to rain down on the land of Egypt.

The hail struck everything in the open fields, both<n id="1" /> people and animals, throughout all the land of Egypt. The hail struck everything that grows<n id="2" /> in the field, and it broke all the trees of the field to pieces.
