When a woman gives birth, she has distress<n id="1" /> because her time<n id="2" /> has come, but when her child is born, she no longer remembers the suffering because of her joy that a human being<n id="3" /> has been born into the world.<n id="4" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">When Jesus had finished saying these things, he looked upward<n id="1" /> to heaven<n id="2" /> and said, &#8220;Father, the time<n id="3" /> has come. Glorify your Son, so that your<n id="4" /> Son may glorify you &#8211;

<t /><p class="bodytext">&#8220;I have revealed<n id="1" /> your name to the men<n id="2" /> you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you,<n id="3" /> and you gave them to me, and they have obeyed<n id="4" /> your word.

that they will all be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I am in you. I pray<n id="1" /> that they will be in us, so that the world will believe that you sent me.

But Jesus said to Peter, &#8220;Put your sword back into its sheath! Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?&#8221;<n id="1" />p>

(Now the slaves<n id="1" /> and the guards<n id="2" /> were standing around a charcoal fire they had made, warming themselves because it was cold.<n id="3" /> Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.)<n id="4" />p>

Jesus replied,<n id="1" /> &#8220;I have spoken publicly to the world. I always taught in the synagogues<n id="2" /> and in the temple courts,<n id="3" /> where all the Jewish people<n id="4" /> assemble together. I<n id="5" /> have said nothing in secret.

One of the high priest&#8217;s slaves,<n id="1" /> a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off,<n id="2" /> said, &#8220;Did I not see you in the orchard<n id="3" /> with him?&#8221;<n id="4" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the Roman governor&#8217;s residence.<n id="1" /> (Now it was very early morning.)<n id="2" /> They<n id="3" /> did not go into the governor&#8217;s residence<n id="4" /> so they would not be ceremonially defiled, but could eat the Passover meal.

Jesus replied, &#8220;You would have no authority<n id="1" /> over me at all, unless it was given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you<n id="2" /> is guilty of greater sin.&#8221;<n id="3" />p>

<p class="bodytext">From this point on, Pilate tried<n id="1" /> to release him. But the Jewish leaders<n id="2" /> shouted out,<n id="3" /> &#8220;If you release this man,<n id="4" /> you are no friend of Caesar!<n id="5" /> Everyone who claims to be a king<n id="6" /> opposes Caesar!&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">Now when the soldiers crucified<n id="1" /> Jesus, they took his clothes and made four shares, one for each soldier,<n id="2" /> and the tunic<n id="3" /> remained. (Now the tunic<n id="4" /> was seamless, woven from top to bottom as a single piece.)<n id="5" />

But these<n id="1" /> are recorded<n id="2" /> so that you may believe<n id="3" /> that Jesus is the Christ,<n id="4" /> the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.<n id="5" />p>

Simon Peter, Thomas<n id="1" /> (called Didymus),<n id="2" /> Nathanael<n id="3" /> (who was from Cana<n id="4" /> in Galilee), the sons<n id="5" /> of Zebedee,<n id="6" /> and two other disciples<n id="7" /> of his were together.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Peter turned around and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them.<n id="1" /> (This was the disciple<n id="2" /> who had leaned back against Jesus&#8217;<n id="3" /> chest at the meal and asked,<n id="4" /> &#8220;Lord, who is the one who is going to betray you?&#8221;)<n id="5" />

There are many other things that Jesus did. If every one of them were written down,<n id="1" /> I suppose the whole world<n id="2" /> would not have room for the books that would be written.<n id="3" />p>

<p class="bodytext">So Jesus answered them,<n id="1" /> &#8220;I tell you the solemn truth,<n id="2" /> the Son can do nothing on his own initiative,<n id="3" /> but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father<n id="4" /> does, the Son does likewise.<n id="5" />

Jesus answered,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you people<n id="2" /> do not know where I came from or where I am going.<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">Then some of the Pharisees began to say,<n id="1" /> &#8220;This man is not from God, because he does not observe<n id="2" /> the Sabbath.&#8221;<n id="3" /> But others said, &#8220;How can a man who is a sinner perform<n id="4" /> such miraculous signs?&#8221; Thus there was a division<n id="5" /> among them.

<p class="bodytext">Then the crowd responded,<n id="1" /> &#8220;We have heard from the law that <i>the Christi><n id="2" /> <i>will remain foreveri>.<n id="3" /> How<n id="4" /> can you say, &#8216;The Son of Man must be lifted up&#8217;? Who is this Son of Man?&#8221;
