<p class="bodytext">Moses said to the <sc>Lordsc>, &#8220;See, you have been saying to me, &#8216;Bring this people up,&#8217;<n id="1" /> but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. But you said, &#8216;I know you by name,<n id="2" /> and also you have found favor in my sight.&#8217;

Thus you are to offer up a raised offering to the <sc>Lordsc> of all your tithes which you receive from the Israelites; and you must give the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s raised offering from it to Aaron the priest.

What is going to happen to us? Our brothers have drained away our courage<n id="1" /> by describing people who are more numerous<n id="2" /> and taller than we are, and great cities whose defenses appear to be as high as heaven<n id="3" /> itself! Moreover, they said they saw<n id="4" /> Anakites<n id="5" /> there.&#8221;

You must fight<n id="1" /> until the <sc>Lordsc> gives your countrymen victory<n id="2" /> as he did you and they take possession of the land that the <sc>Lordsc> your God is giving them on the other side of the Jordan River. Then each of you may return to his own territory that I have given you.&#8221;

As for me, I stayed at the mountain as I did the first time, forty days and nights. The <sc>Lordsc> listened to me that time as well and decided not to destroy you.

After they have been destroyed from your presence, be careful not to be ensnared like they are; do not pursue their gods and say, &#8220;How do these nations serve their gods? I will do the same.&#8221;

You must not worship the <sc>Lordsc> your God the way they do!<n id="1" /> For everything that is abhorrent<n id="2" /> to him,<n id="3" /> everything he hates, they have done when worshiping their gods. They even burn up their sons and daughters before their gods!p>

<p class="bodytext">If a man is caught having sexual relations with<n id="1" /> a married woman<n id="2" /> both the man who had relations with the woman and the woman herself must die; in this way you will purge<n id="3" /> evil from Israel.p>

Then you shall say before the <sc>Lordsc> your God, &#8220;I have removed the sacred offering<n id="1" /> from my house and given it to the Levites, the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows just as you have commanded me.<n id="2" /> I have not violated or forgotten your commandments.

So now, promise me this with an oath sworn in the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s name.<n id="1" /> Because I have shown allegiance to you, show allegiance to my family.<n id="2" /> Give me a solemn pledge<n id="3" />

The <sc>Lordsc> handed it and its king over to Israel, and Israel<n id="1" /> put the sword to all who lived there; they<n id="2" /> left no survivors. They<n id="3" /> did to its king what they<n id="4" /> had done to the king of Jericho.<n id="5" />p>

(Now to one half-tribe of Manasseh, Moses had assigned land in Bashan; and to the other half Joshua had assigned land on the west side of the Jordan with their fellow Israelites.) When Joshua sent them home,<n id="1" /> he rewarded<n id="2" /> them,

But they did not obey<n id="1" /> their leaders. Instead they prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped<n id="2" /> them. They quickly turned aside from the path<n id="3" /> their ancestors<n id="4" /> had walked. Their ancestors had obeyed the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s commands, but they did not.<n id="5" />

Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, &#8220;Please allow us<n id="1" /> to pass through your land.&#8221; But the king of Edom rejected the request.<n id="2" /> Israel sent the same request to the king of Moab, but he was unwilling to cooperate.<n id="3" /> So Israel stayed at Kadesh.

He said to his mother, &#8220;You know<n id="1" /> the eleven hundred pieces of silver which were stolen<n id="2" /> from you, about which I heard you pronounce a curse? Look here, I have the silver. I stole<n id="3" /> it, but now I am giving it back to you.&#8221;<n id="4" /> His mother said, &#8220;May the <sc>Lordsc> reward<n id="5" /> you, my son!&#8221;

The Israelites returned to the Benjaminite towns<n id="1" /> and put the sword to them. They wiped out the cities,<n id="2" /> the animals, and everything they could find. They set fire to every city in their path.<n id="3" />p>

<p class="bodytext">So Boaz said to Ruth, &#8220;Listen carefully,<n id="1" /> my dear!<n id="2" /> Do not leave to gather grain in another field. You need not<n id="3" /> go beyond the limits of this field. You may go along beside<n id="4" /> my female workers.<n id="5" />

Ruth the Moabite replied, &#8220;He even<n id="1" /> told me, &#8216;You may go along beside my servants<n id="2" /> until they have finished gathering all my harvest!&#8217;&#8221;<n id="3" />

I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, the wife of Mahlon, as my wife to raise up a descendant who will inherit his property<n id="1" /> so the name of the deceased might not disappear<n id="2" /> from among his relatives and from his village.<n id="3" /> You are witnesses today.&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">Even before they burned the fat, the priest&#8217;s attendant would come and say to the person who was making the sacrifice, &#8220;Hand over some meat for the priest to roast! He won&#8217;t take boiled meat from you, but only raw.&#8221;<n id="1" />
