Jesus ¹  answered them, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.

“Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and father children ¹  for his brother.’ ² 

For false messiahs ¹  and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

He went away a second time and prayed, ¹  “My Father, if this cup ²  cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will must be done.”

and saying, “You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! ¹  If you are God’s Son, come down ²  from the cross!”

Peter ¹  said to him, “If they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away!”

But the rest said, “Leave him alone! Let’s see if Elijah will come to save him.” ¹ 

And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, ¹  we would not have participated with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’

He trusts in God – let God, if he wants to, deliver him now ¹  because he said, ‘I am God’s Son’!”

Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you.” And all the disciples said the same thing.

Jesus ¹  answered them, “I tell you the truth, ²  if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.

And if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.

So then, if someone ¹  says to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ ²  do not go out, or ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe him.

And if anyone will not welcome you or listen to your message, shake the dust off ¹  your feet as you leave that house or that town.

And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing. ¹  But if anyone swears by the gift on it he is bound by the oath.’

But you say, ‘If someone tells his father or mother, “Whatever help you would have received from me is given to God,” ¹ 

If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into hell. ¹ 

If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into hell.

“He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the king of Israel! If he comes down ¹  now from the cross, we will believe in him!

“You are the salt ¹  of the earth. But if salt loses its flavor, ²  how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled on by people.
