So the Pharisees<n id="1" /> objected,<n id="2" /> &#8220;You testify about yourself; your testimony is not true!&#8221;<n id="3" />

But some of them went to the Pharisees<n id="1" /> and reported to them<n id="2" /> what Jesus had done.

When he said this,<n id="1" /> an argument<n id="2" /> began<n id="3" /> between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.

(For the Sadducees say there is no resurrection, or angel, or spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.)<n id="1" />

They know,<n id="1" /> because they have known<n id="2" /> me from time past,<n id="3" /> if they are willing to testify, that according to the strictest party<n id="4" /> of our religion, I lived as a Pharisee.<n id="5" />

When the Pharisees<n id="1" /> saw this they said to his disciples, &#8220;Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?&#8221;<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then John&#8217;s<n id="1" /> disciples came to Jesus<n id="2" /> and asked, &#8220;Why do we and the Pharisees<n id="3" /> fast often,<n id="4" /> but your disciples don&#8217;t fast?&#8221;

But when the Pharisees<n id="1" /> saw this they said to him, &#8220;Look, your disciples are doing what is against the law to do on the Sabbath.&#8221;

But when the Pharisees<n id="1" /> heard this they said, &#8220;He does not cast out demons except by the power of Beelzebul,<n id="2" /> the ruler<n id="3" /> of demons!&#8221;

How could you not understand that I was not speaking to you about bread? But beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!&#8221;

Then they understood that he had not told them to be on guard against the yeast in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.p>

<p class="bodytext">Then some Pharisees<n id="1" /> came to him in order to test him. They asked, &#8220;Is it lawful<n id="2" /> to divorce a wife for any cause?&#8221;<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;Woe to you, experts in the law<n id="1" /> and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.

Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup,<n id="1" /> so that the outside may become clean too!p>

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;Woe to you, experts in the law<n id="1" /> and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that look beautiful on the outside but inside are full of the bones of the dead and of everything unclean.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;Woe to you, experts in the law<n id="1" /> and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You<n id="2" /> build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves<n id="3" /> of the righteous.

(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they perform a ritual washing,<n id="1" /> holding fast to the tradition of the elders.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then the Pharisees<n id="1" /> came and began to argue with Jesus, asking for<n id="2" /> a sign from heaven<n id="3" /> to test him.

But<n id="1" /> the Pharisees<n id="2" /> and their experts in the law<n id="3" /> complained<n id="4" /> to his disciples, saying, &#8220;Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?&#8221;<n id="5" />

The experts in the law<n id="1" /> and the Pharisees<n id="2" /> watched<n id="3" /> Jesus<n id="4" /> closely to see if<n id="5" /> he would heal on the Sabbath,<n id="6" /> so that they could find a reason to accuse him.
