Gershon’s descendants were allotted thirteen cities from the clans of the tribe of Issachar, and from the tribes of Asher and Naphtali and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.

So the Israelites assigned to the Levites by lot these cities and their grazing areas, as the <sc>Lordsc> had instructed Moses.p>

The Merarite clans (the remaining Levites) were allotted twelve cities.p>

<p class="bodytext">These were the areas where Aaron&#8217;s descendants lived:<n id="1" />p> <p class="bodytext">The following belonged to the Kohathite clan, for they received the first allotment:<n id="2" />p>

The rest of Kohath&#8217;s descendants were allotted ten cities in the territory of the half-tribe of Manasseh.<n id="1" />p>

<p class="bodytext">The clans of Merari&#8217;s descendants were allotted twelve cities within the territory of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.<n id="1" />p>

They divided them by lots, for there were officials of the holy place and officials designated by God among the descendants of both Eleazar and Ithamar.<n id="1" />

For Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had devised plans against the Jews to destroy them. He had cast <i>puri> (that is, the lot) in order to afflict and destroy them.

<p class="poetry">Indeed,<n id="1" /> the scepter of a wicked king<n id="2" /> will not settle<n id="3" />p> <p class="poetry">upon the allotted land of the godly.p> <p class="poetry">Otherwise the godly mightp> <p class="poetry">do what is wrong.<n id="4" />p>

<p class="poetry">You stood aloof<n id="1" /> while strangers took his army<n id="2" /> captive,p> <p class="poetry">and foreigners advanced to his gates.<n id="3" />p> <p class="poetry">When they cast lots<n id="4" /> over Jerusalem,<n id="5" />p> <p class="poetry">you behaved as though you were in league<n id="6" /> with them.p>

<p class="bodytext">Then Moses commanded the Israelites: &#8220;This is the land which you will inherit by lot, which the <sc>Lordsc> has commanded to be given<n id="1" /> to the nine and a half tribes,

They said, &#8220;The <sc>Lordsc> commanded my lord to give<n id="1" /> the land as an inheritance by lot to the Israelites; and my lord was commanded by the <sc>Lordsc> to give the inheritance of our brother Zelophehad to his daughters.

Now if they should be married to one of the men<n id="1" /> from another Israelite tribe, their inheritance would be taken from the inheritance of our fathers and added to the inheritance of the tribe into which they marry.<n id="2" /> As a result, it will be taken from the lot of our inheritance.

<p class="bodytext">The tribe of Manasseh, Joseph&#8217;s firstborn son, was also allotted land.<n id="1" /> The descendants of Makir, Manasseh&#8217;s firstborn and the father of Gilead, received land, for they were warriors.<n id="2" /> They were assigned Gilead and Bashan.<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">The descendants of Joseph said to Joshua, &#8220;Why have you assigned us only one tribal allotment? After all, we have many people, for until now the <sc>Lordsc> has enabled us to increase in number.&#8221;<n id="1" />

Joshua said to the family<n id="1" /> of Joseph &#8211; to both Ephraim and Manasseh: &#8220;You have many people and great military strength. You will not have just one tribal allotment.

<p class="bodytext">When the men started out, Joshua told those going to map out the land, &#8220;Go, walk through the land, map it out, and return to me. Then I will draw lots for you before the <sc>Lordsc> here in Shiloh.&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">These are the land assignments which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the Israelite tribal leaders<n id="1" /> made by drawing lots in Shiloh before the <sc>Lordsc> at the entrance of the tent of meeting.<n id="2" /> So they finished dividing up the land.p>
