Their descendants<n id="1" /> entered and possessed the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites who were the inhabitants of the land. You delivered them into their hand, together with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with as they pleased.

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;Nonetheless they grew disobedient and rebelled against you; they disregarded your law.<n id="1" /> They killed your prophets who had solemnly admonished them in order to cause them to return to you. They committed atrocious blasphemies.

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;Then, when they were at rest again, they went back to doing evil before you. Then you abandoned them to<n id="1" /> their enemies, and they gained dominion over them. When they again cried out to you, in your compassion you heard from heaven and rescued them time and again.

And you solemnly admonished them in order to return them to your law, but they behaved presumptuously and did not obey your commandments. They sinned against your ordinances &#8211; those by which an individual, if he obeys them,<n id="1" /> will live. They boldly turned from you;<n id="2" /> they rebelled<n id="3" /> and did not obey.

hereby participate with their colleagues the town leaders<n id="1" /> and enter into a curse and an oath<n id="2" /> to adhere to<n id="3" /> the law of God which was given through Moses the servant of God, and to obey<n id="4" /> carefully all the commandments of the <sc>LORDsc> our Lord,<n id="5" /> along with his ordinances and his statutes.p>

He made for himself a large storeroom where previously they had been keeping<n id="1" /> the grain offering, the incense, and the vessels, along with the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the olive oil as commanded for the Levites, the singers, the gate keepers, and the offering for the priests.p>

Isn&#8217;t this the way your ancestors<n id="1" /> acted, causing our God to bring on them and on this city all this misfortune? And now you are causing even more wrath on Israel, profaning the Sabbath like this!&#8221;p>

I also shook out my garment,<n id="1" /> and I said, &#8220;In this way may God shake out from his house and his property every person who does not carry out<n id="2" /> this matter. In this way may he be shaken out and emptied!&#8221; All the assembly replied, &#8220;So be it!&#8221; and they praised the <sc>LORDsc>. Then the people did as they had promised.<n id="3" />p>
