So we cried out to the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of our ancestors, and he<n id="1" /> heard us and saw our humiliation, toil, and oppression.

Today you have declared the <sc>Lordsc> to be your God, and that you will walk in his ways, keep his statutes, commandments, and ordinances, and obey him.

<p class="bodytext">Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel: &#8220;Be quiet and pay attention, Israel. Today you have become the people of the <sc>Lordsc> your God.

You must obey him<n id="1" /> and keep his commandments and statutes that I am giving you today.&#8221;

The <sc>Lordsc> will raise up a distant nation against you, one from the other side of the earth<n id="1" /> as the eagle flies,<n id="2" /> a nation whose language you will not understand,

There will be very few of you left, though at one time you were as numerous as the stars in the sky,<n id="1" /> because you will have disobeyed<n id="2" /> the <sc>Lordsc> your God.

But to this very day the <sc>Lordsc> has not given you an understanding mind, perceptive eyes, or discerning ears!<n id="1" />

Then if you and your descendants<n id="1" /> turn to the <sc>Lordsc> your God and obey him with your whole mind and being<n id="2" /> just as<n id="3" /> I am commanding you today,

You will return and obey the <sc>Lordsc>, keeping all his commandments I am giving<n id="1" /> you today.

It is not in heaven, as though one must say, &#8220;Who will go up to heaven to get it for us and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?&#8221;

And it is not across the sea, as though one must say, &#8220;Who will cross over to the other side of the sea and get it for us and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?&#8221;

<t /><p class="poetry">And this is the blessing<n id="1" /> to Judah. He said,p> <p class="poetry">Listen, O <sc>Lordsc>, to Judah&#8217;s voice,p> <p class="poetry">and bring him to his people.p> <p class="poetry">May his power be great,p> <p class="poetry">and may you help him against his foes.p>

But the <sc>Lordsc> was angry at me because of you and would not listen to me. Instead, he<n id="1" /> said to me, &#8220;Enough of that!<n id="2" /> Do not speak to me anymore about this matter.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now, Israel, pay attention to the statutes and ordinances<n id="1" /> I am about to teach you, so that you might live and go on to enter and take possession of the land that the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of your ancestors,<n id="2" /> is giving you.

So be sure to do them, because this will testify of your wise understanding<n id="1" /> to the people who will learn of all these statutes and say, &#8220;Indeed, this great nation is a very wise<n id="2" /> people.&#8221;

<t /><p class="bodytext">Indeed, ask about the distant past, starting from the day God created humankind<n id="1" /> on the earth, and ask<n id="2" /> from one end of heaven to the other, whether there has ever been such a great thing as this, or even a rumor of it.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then Moses called all the people of Israel together and said to them:<n id="1" /> &#8220;Listen, Israel, to the statutes and ordinances that I am about to deliver to you today; learn them and be careful to keep them!

You said, &#8220;The <sc>Lordsc> our God has shown us his great glory<n id="1" /> and we have heard him speak from the middle of the fire. It is now clear to us<n id="2" /> that God can speak to human beings and they can keep on living.

Pay attention, Israel, and be careful to do this so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in number<n id="1" /> &#8211; as the <sc>Lordsc>, God of your ancestors,<n id="2" /> said to you, you will have a land flowing with milk and honey.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">If you obey these ordinances and are careful to do them, the <sc>Lordsc> your God will faithfully keep covenant with you<n id="1" /> as he promised<n id="2" /> your ancestors.
