He followed in the footsteps of the kings of Israel, just as Ahab&#8217;s dynasty had done, for he married Ahab&#8217;s daughter.<n id="1" /> He did evil in the sight of<n id="2" /> the <sc>Lordsc>.

<t /><p class="bodytext">In the twelfth year of the reign of Israel&#8217;s King Joram, son of Ahab, Jehoram&#8217;s son Ahaziah became king over Judah.

Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king and he reigned for one year in Jerusalem.<n id="1" /> His mother was Athaliah, the granddaughter<n id="2" /> of King Omri of Israel.

But they said, &#8220;You&#8217;re lying! Tell us what he said.&#8221; So he told them what he had said. He also related how he had said,<n id="1" /> &#8220;This is what the <sc>Lordsc> says, &#8216;I have designated you as king over Israel.&#8217;&#8221;

He did evil in the sight of<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc>. He continued in<n id="2" /> the sinful ways of Jeroboam son of Nebat who had encouraged Israel to sin; he did not repudiate those sins.<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">Jehoahaz asked for the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s mercy<n id="1" /> and the <sc>Lordsc> responded favorably,<n id="2" /> for he saw that Israel was oppressed by the king of Syria.<n id="3" />

The <sc>Lordsc> provided a deliverer<n id="1" /> for Israel and they were freed from Syria&#8217;s power.<n id="2" /> The Israelites once more lived in security.<n id="3" />

But they did not repudiate<n id="1" /> the sinful ways of the family<n id="2" /> of Jeroboam, who encouraged Israel to sin; they continued in those sins.<n id="3" /> There was even an Asherah pole<n id="4" /> standing in Samaria.

<t /><p class="bodytext">In the thirty-seventh year of King Joash&#8217;s reign over Judah, Jehoahaz&#8217;s son Jehoash became king over Israel. He reigned in Samaria<n id="1" /> for sixteen years.

He did evil in the sight of<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc>. He did not repudiate<n id="2" /> the sinful ways of Jeroboam son of Nebat who encouraged Israel to sin; he continued in those sins.<n id="3" />

Joash passed away<n id="1" /> and Jeroboam succeeded him on the throne.<n id="2" /> Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.p>

Then Elisha<n id="1" /> told the king of Israel, &#8220;Aim the bow.&#8221;<n id="2" /> He did so,<n id="3" /> and Elisha placed his hands on the king&#8217;s hands.

Then Elisha<n id="1" /> said, &#8220;Take the arrows,&#8221; and he did so.<n id="2" /> He told the king of Israel, &#8220;Strike the ground!&#8221; He struck the ground three times and stopped.

<t /><p class="bodytext">In the second year of the reign of Israel&#8217;s King Joash son of Joahaz,<n id="1" /> Joash&#8217;s<n id="2" /> son Amaziah became king over Judah.

Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel. He said, &#8220;Come, let&#8217;s meet face to face.&#8221;<n id="1" />

But Amaziah would not heed the warning,<n id="1" /> so King Jehoash of Israel attacked.<n id="2" /> He and King Amaziah of Judah met face to face<n id="3" /> in Beth Shemesh of Judah.

Jehoash passed away<n id="1" /> and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. His son Jeroboam replaced him as king.)p>

<p class="bodytext">King Amaziah son of Joash of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of King Jehoash son of Jehoahaz of Israel.
