When the rainbow is in the clouds, I will notice it and remember<n id="1" /> the perpetual covenant between God and all living creatures of all kinds that are on the earth.&#8221; p>

<p class="bodytext">A fugitive<n id="1" /> came and told Abram the Hebrew.<n id="2" /> Now Abram was living by the oaks<n id="3" /> of Mamre the Amorite, the brother<n id="4" /> of Eshcol and Aner. (All these were allied by treaty<n id="5" /> with Abram.)<n id="6" />

<p class="bodytext">So they made a treaty<n id="1" /> at Beer Sheba. Then Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, returned<n id="2" /> to the land of the Philistines.<n id="3" />

They replied, &#8220;We could plainly see<n id="1" /> that the <sc>Lordsc> is with you. So we decided there should be<n id="2" /> a pact between us<n id="3" /> &#8211; between us<n id="4" /> and you. Allow us to make<n id="5" /> a treaty with you

Be careful not to make<n id="1" /> a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it become a snare<n id="2" /> among you.

Be careful<n id="1" /> not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when<n id="2" /> they prostitute themselves<n id="3" /> to their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and someone invites you,<n id="4" /> you will eat from his sacrifice;

Moreover, you must season every one of your grain offerings with salt; you must not allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be missing from your grain offering<n id="1" /> &#8211; on every one of your grain offerings you must present salt.p>

Each Sabbath day<n id="1" /> Aaron<n id="2" /> must arrange it before the <sc>Lordsc> continually; this portion<n id="3" /> is from the Israelites as a perpetual covenant.

I will bring on you an avenging sword, a covenant vengeance.<n id="1" /> Although<n id="2" /> you will gather together into your cities, I will send pestilence among you and you will be given into enemy hands.<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">But they dared<n id="1" /> to go up to the crest of the hill, although<n id="2" /> neither the ark of the covenant of the <sc>Lordsc> nor Moses departed from the camp.

So it will be to him and his descendants after him a covenant of a permanent priesthood, because he has been zealous for his God,<n id="1" /> and has made atonement<n id="2" /> for the Israelites.&#8217;&#8221;p>

(for he<n id="1" /> is a merciful God), he will not let you down<n id="2" /> or destroy you, for he cannot<n id="3" /> forget the covenant with your ancestors that he confirmed by oath to them.p>

and he<n id="1" /> delivers them over to you and you attack them, you must utterly annihilate<n id="2" /> them. Make no treaty<n id="3" /> with them and show them no mercy!

Then people will say, &#8220;Because they abandoned the covenant of the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of their ancestors, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.

&#8220;Take this scroll of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the <sc>Lordsc> your God. It will remain there as a witness against you,

They came to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, &#8220;We have come from a distant land. Make a treaty with us.&#8221;

The men of Israel said to the Hivites, &#8220;Perhaps you live near us.<n id="1" /> So how can we make a treaty with you?&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">Three days after they made the treaty with them, the Israelites found out they were from the local area and lived nearby.<n id="1" />
