<t /><p class="bodytext">Now Pashhur son of Immer heard Jeremiah prophesy these things. He was the priest who was chief of security<n id="1" /> in the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s temple.

When he heard Jeremiah&#8217;s prophecy, he had the prophet flogged.<n id="1" /> Then he put him in the stocks<n id="2" /> which were at the Upper Gate of Benjamin in the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s temple.<n id="3" />

So the prophet Jeremiah spoke to all the people of Judah and to all the people who were living in Jerusalem.<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">The priests, the prophets, and all the people heard Jeremiah say these things in the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s temple.

<p class="bodytext">However, Ahikam son of Shaphan<n id="1" /> used his influence to keep Jeremiah from being handed over and executed by the people.<n id="2" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">In the tenth year that Zedekiah was ruling over Judah the <sc>Lordsc> spoke to Jeremiah.<n id="1" /> That was the same as the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">The <sc>Lordsc> spoke to Jeremiah when Jehoiakim<n id="1" /> son of Josiah was ruling over Judah.<n id="2" />

So I went and got Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah the grandson of Habazziniah, his brothers, all his sons, and all the rest of the Rechabite community.

<t /><p class="bodytext">The <sc>Lordsc> spoke to Jeremiah in the fourth year<n id="1" /> that Jehoiakim son of Josiah was ruling over Judah.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">So Baruch son of Neriah did exactly what the prophet Jeremiah had told him to do. He read what the <sc>Lordsc> had said from the scroll in the temple of the <sc>Lordsc>.<n id="1" />

Neither he nor the officials who served him nor the people of Judah paid any attention to what the <sc>Lordsc> said through the prophet Jeremiah.<n id="1" />p>

Jeremiah answered, &#8220;That&#8217;s a lie! I am not deserting to the Babylonians.&#8221;<n id="1" /> But Irijah would not listen to him. Irijah put Jeremiah under arrest and took him to the officials.

The officials were very angry<n id="1" /> at Jeremiah. They had him flogged and put in prison in the house of Jonathan, the royal secretary, which they had converted into a place for confining prisoners.<n id="2" />p>

Then Jeremiah asked King Zedekiah, &#8220;What crime have I committed against you, or the officials who serve you, or the people of Judah? What have I done to make you people throw me into prison?<n id="1" />

Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, &#8220;If I answer you, you will certainly kill me.<n id="1" /> If I give you advice, you will not listen to me.&#8221;

Then Jeremiah answered, &#8220;You will not be handed over to them. Please obey the <sc>Lordsc> by doing what I have been telling you.<n id="1" /> Then all will go well with you and your life will be spared.<n id="2" />

So Jeremiah remained confined<n id="1" /> in the courtyard of the guardhouse until the day Jerusalem<n id="2" /> was captured.p><t /><p class="bodytext">The following events occurred when Jerusalem<n id="3" /> was captured.<n id="4" />p>

So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah<n id="1" /> and lived there with him. He stayed there to live among the people who had been left in the land of Judah.<n id="2" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">The <sc>Lordsc> spoke to Jeremiah concerning<n id="1" /> all the Judeans who were living in the land of Egypt, those in Migdol, Tahpanhes, Memphis, and in the region of southern Egypt.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">Then Jeremiah replied to all the people, both men and women, who responded to him in this way.<n id="1" />
