So Esau went to Ishmael and married ¹  Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Abraham’s son Ishmael, along with the wives he already had.

The messengers returned to Jacob and said, “We went to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you and has four hundred men with him.”

“If Esau attacks one camp,” ¹  he thought, ²  “then the other camp will be able to escape.” ³ 

Rescue me, ¹  I pray, from the hand ²  of my brother Esau, ³  for I am afraid he will come ⁴  and attack me, as well as the mothers with their children. ⁵ 

He instructed the servant leading the first herd, ¹  “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘To whom do you belong? ²  Where are you going? Whose herds are you driving?’ ³ 

So Esau said, “Let me leave some of my men with you.” ¹  “Why do that?” Jacob replied. ²  “My lord has already been kind enough to me.” ³ 

Then Isaac breathed his last and joined his ancestors. ¹  He died an old man who had lived a full life. ²  His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

Esau took his wives from the Canaanites: ¹  Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah the daughter of Anah and granddaughter ²  of Zibeon the Hivite,

and Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These were the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.

These were the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the sons ¹  of Esau’s wife Basemath.

These were the sons of Esau’s wife Oholibamah the daughter of Anah and granddaughter ¹  of Zibeon: She bore Jeush, Jalam, and Korah to Esau.

These were the names of the chiefs of Esau, according to their families, according to their places, by their names: chief Timna, chief Alvah, chief Jetheth,

chief Magdiel, chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, according to their settlements ¹  in the land they possessed. This was Esau, the father of the Edomites.

Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Say to your brothers, ‘Do this: Load your animals and go ¹  to the land of Canaan!

You are also commanded to say, ¹  ‘Do this: Take for yourselves wagons from the land of Egypt for your little ones and for your wives. Bring your father and come.

And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew ¹  Lot, and all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired ²  in Haran, and they left for ³  the land of Canaan. They entered the land of Canaan.

went to war ¹  against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). ² 

Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau, your firstborn. I’ve done as you told me. Now sit up ¹  and eat some of my wild game so that you can bless me.” ² 

Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him off to Paddan Aram to find a wife there. ¹  As he blessed him, ²  Isaac commanded him, “You must not marry a Canaanite woman.” ³ 

He also gave these instructions to the second and third servants, as well as all those who were following the herds, saying, “You must say the same thing to Esau when you meet him. ¹
