Reuben continued, ¹  “Don’t shed blood! Throw him into this cistern that is here in the wilderness, but don’t lay a hand on him.” ²  (Reuben said this ³  so he could rescue Joseph ⁴  from them ⁵  and take him back to his father.)

But he refused, saying ¹  to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not give any thought ²  to his household with me here, ³  and everything that he owns he has put into my care. ⁴ 

He said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful ¹  and will multiply you. ²  I will make you into a group of nations, and I will give this land to your descendants ³  as an everlasting possession.’ ⁴ 

So Laban entered Jacob’s tent, and Leah’s tent, and the tent of the two female servants, but he did not find the idols. ¹  Then he left Leah’s tent and entered Rachel’s. ² 

When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought inside, ¹  and they bowed down to the ground before him.

Then the Lord God made ¹  a woman from the part he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

Noah entered the ark along with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives because ¹  of the floodwaters.

From that land he went ¹  to Assyria, ²  where he built Nineveh, ³  Rehoboth-Ir, ⁴  Calah, ⁵ 

When Jacob finished giving these instructions to his sons, he pulled his feet up onto the bed, breathed his last breath, and went ¹  to his people.

When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.

Then she handed ¹  the tasty food and the bread she had made to her son Jacob.

He restored the chief cupbearer to his former position ¹  so that he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand,

He brought with him to Egypt his sons and grandsons, ¹  his daughters and granddaughters – all his descendants.

Jacob ¹  sent Judah before him to Joseph to accompany him to Goshen. ²  So they came to the land of Goshen.

God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place ¹  and let dry ground appear.” ²  It was so.

but I will confirm ¹  my covenant with you. You will enter ²  the ark – you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

for I really was kidnapped ¹  from the land of the Hebrews and I have done nothing wrong here for which they should put me in a dungeon.”

Joseph hurried out, for he was overcome by affection for his brother ¹  and was at the point of tears. ²  So he went to his room and wept there.

All the direct descendants of Jacob who went to Egypt with him were sixty-six in number. (This number does not include the wives of Jacob’s sons.) ¹ 

Every living creature of the earth and every bird of the sky will be terrified of you. ¹  Everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea are under your authority. ²
