And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew<n id="1" /> Lot, and all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired<n id="2" /> in Haran, and they left for<n id="3" /> the land of Canaan. They entered the land of Canaan.p>

<p class="bodytext">So after Abram had lived<n id="1" /> in Canaan for ten years, Sarai, Abram&#8217;s wife, gave Hagar, her Egyptian servant,<n id="2" /> to her husband to be his wife.<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">Abraham took his son Ishmael and every male in his household (whether born in his house or bought with money)<n id="1" /> and circumcised them<n id="2" /> on that very same day, just as God had told him to do.

<p class="bodytext">Then Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law who were going to marry his daughters.<n id="1" /> He said, &#8220;Quick, get out of this place because the <sc>Lordsc> is about to destroy<n id="2" /> the city!&#8221; But his sons-in-law thought he was ridiculing them.<n id="3" />p>

<p class="bodytext">At dawn<n id="1" /> the angels hurried Lot along, saying, &#8220;Get going! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here,<n id="2" /> or else you will be destroyed when the city is judged!&#8221;<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">Early in the morning Abraham took<n id="1" /> some food<n id="2" /> and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He put them on her shoulders, gave her the child,<n id="3" /> and sent her away. So she went wandering<n id="4" /> aimlessly through the wilderness<n id="5" /> of Beer Sheba.

God<n id="1" /> said, &#8220;Take your son &#8211; your only son, whom you love, Isaac<n id="2" /> &#8211; and go to the land of Moriah!<n id="3" /> Offer him up there as a burnt offering<n id="4" /> on one of the mountains which I will indicate to<n id="5" /> you.&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">Early in the morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey.<n id="1" /> He took two of his young servants with him, along with his son Isaac. When he had cut the wood for the burnt offering, he started out<n id="2" /> for the place God had spoken to him about.p>

<p class="bodytext">Abraham looked up<n id="1" /> and saw<n id="2" /> behind him<n id="3" /> a ram caught in the bushes by its horns. So he<n id="4" /> went over and got the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.

and said to Ephron in their hearing, &#8220;Hear me, if you will. I pay<n id="1" /> to you the price<n id="2" /> of the field. Take it from me so that I may<n id="3" /> bury my dead there.&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">Then the servant took ten of his master&#8217;s camels and departed with all kinds of gifts from his master at his disposal.<n id="1" /> He journeyed<n id="2" /> to the region of Aram Naharaim<n id="3" /> and the city of Nahor.

Then I bowed down and worshiped the <sc>Lordsc>. I praised the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the right path to find the granddaughter<n id="1" /> of my master&#8217;s brother for his son.

Stay there<n id="1" /> until your brother&#8217;s anger against you subsides and he forgets what you did to him. Then I&#8217;ll send someone to bring you back from there.<n id="2" /> Why should I lose both of you in one day?&#8221;<n id="3" />p>

<p class="bodytext">Then Rebekah said to Isaac, &#8220;I am deeply depressed<n id="1" /> because of these daughters of Heth.<n id="2" /> If Jacob were to marry one of these daughters of Heth who live in this land, I would want to die!&#8221;<n id="3" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">Jacob heard that Laban&#8217;s sons were complaining,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Jacob has taken everything that belonged to our father! He has gotten rich<n id="2" /> at our father&#8217;s expense!&#8221;<n id="3" />

Whoever has taken your gods will be put to death!<n id="1" /> In the presence of our relatives<n id="2" /> identify whatever is yours and take it.&#8221;<n id="3" /> (Now Jacob did not know that Rachel had stolen them.)<n id="4" />p>

<p class="bodytext">During the night Jacob quickly took<n id="1" /> his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons<n id="2" /> and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.<n id="3" />

&#8220;No, please take them,&#8221; Jacob said.<n id="1" /> &#8220;If I have found favor in your sight, accept<n id="2" /> my gift from my hand. Now that I have seen your face and you have accepted me,<n id="3" /> it is as if I have seen the face of God.<n id="4" />

&#8220;These men are at peace with us. So let them live in the land and travel freely in it, for the land is wide enough<n id="1" /> for them. We will take their daughters for wives, and we will give them our daughters to marry.<n id="2" />

In three days, when they were still in pain, two of Jacob&#8217;s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah&#8217;s brothers, each took his sword<n id="1" /> and went to the unsuspecting city<n id="2" /> and slaughtered every male.
