The <sc>Lordsc> was angry at Amaziah and sent a prophet to him, who said, &#8220;Why are you following<n id="1" /> these gods<n id="2" /> that could not deliver their own people from your power?&#8221;<n id="3" />

He wrote letters mocking the <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel and insulting him with these words:<n id="1" /> &#8220;The gods of the surrounding nations could not rescue their people from my power. Neither can Hezekiah&#8217;s god rescue his people from my power.&#8221;<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now when these things had been completed, the leaders approached me and said, &#8220;The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated themselves from the local residents<n id="1" /> who practice detestable things similar to those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.

But the former governors who preceded me had burdened the people and had taken food and wine from them, in addition to<n id="1" /> forty shekels of silver. Their associates were also domineering over the people. But I did not behave in this way, due to my fear of God.

<p class="bodytext">Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah &#8211; all of whom were Levites<n id="1" /> &#8211; were teaching the people the law, as the people remained standing.

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;Now the rest of the people &#8211; the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the temple attendants, and all those who have separated themselves from the neighboring peoples<n id="1" /> because of the law of God, along with their wives, their sons, and their daughters, all of whom are able to understand &#8211;

<t /><p class="bodytext">So the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem,<n id="1" /> while the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten to settle in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the other nine<n id="2" /> remained in other cities.

But the thought of striking out against<n id="1" /> Mordecai alone was repugnant to him, for he had been informed<n id="2" /> of the identity of Mordecai&#8217;s people.<n id="3" /> So Haman sought to destroy all the Jews (that is, the people of Mordecai)<n id="4" /> who were in all the kingdom of Ahasuerus.p>

<p class="poetry">At that timep> <p class="poetry">tribute will be brought to the <sc>Lordsc> who commands armies,p> <p class="poetry">by a people that are tall and smooth-skinned,p> <p class="poetry">a people that are feared far and wide,p> <p class="poetry">a nation strong and victorious,p> <p class="poetry">whose land rivers divide.<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">The tribute<n id="2" /> will be brought to the place where the <sc>Lordsc> who commands armies has chosen to reside, on Mount Zion.<n id="3" />p>

I, the <sc>Lordsc>, affirm<n id="1" /> that I am opposed to those prophets who dream up lies and report them. They are misleading my people with their reckless lies.<n id="2" /> I did not send them. I did not commission them. They are not helping these people at all.<n id="3" /> I, the <sc>Lordsc>, affirm it!&#8221;<n id="4" />p>

Jeremiah had just barely finished saying all the <sc>Lordsc> had commanded him to say to all the people. All at once some<n id="1" /> of the priests, the prophets, and the people grabbed him and shouted, &#8220;You deserve to die!<n id="2" />

&#8220;You have surely noticed what these people are saying, haven&#8217;t you? They are saying,<n id="1" /> &#8216;The <sc>Lordsc> has rejected the two families of Israel and Judah<n id="2" /> that he chose.&#8217; So they have little regard that my people will ever again be a nation.<n id="3" />

All the people living in Jerusalem<n id="1" /> and all the people who came into Jerusalem from the towns of Judah came to observe a fast before the <sc>Lordsc>. The fast took place in the ninth month of the fifth year that Jehoiakim son of Josiah was ruling over Judah.<n id="2" />

Then Nebuzaradan, the captain of the royal guard,<n id="1" /> took captive the rest of the people who were left in the city. He carried them off to Babylon along with the people who had deserted to him.<n id="2" />

Nebuzaradan, the captain of the royal guard, took into exile some of the poor,<n id="1" /> the rest of the people who remained in the city, those who had deserted to him, and the rest of the craftsmen.

You have profaned me among my people for handfuls of barley and scraps of bread. You have put to death people<n id="1" /> who should not die and kept alive those who should not live by your lies to my people, who listen to lies!p>

<p class="poetry">Cry out and moan, son of man,p> <p class="poetry">for it is wielded against my people;p> <p class="poetry">against all the princes of Israel.p> <p class="poetry">They are delivered up to the sword, along with my people.p> <p class="poetry">Therefore, strike your thigh.<n id="1" />p>

&#8220;Son of man, speak to your people,<n id="1" /> and say to them, &#8216;Suppose I bring a sword against the land, and the people of the land take one man from their borders and make him their watchman.

They come to you in crowds,<n id="1" /> and they sit in front of you as<n id="2" /> my people. They hear your words, but do not obey<n id="3" /> them. For they talk lustfully,<n id="4" /> and their heart is set on<n id="5" /> their own advantage.<n id="6" />

After many days you will be summoned; in the latter years you will come to a land restored from the ravages of war,<n id="1" /> with many peoples gathered on the mountains of Israel that had long been in ruins. Its people<n id="2" /> were brought out from the peoples, and all of them will be living securely.
