In addition,<n id="1" /> this brother<n id="2" /> has also been chosen by the churches as our traveling companion as we administer this generous gift<n id="3" /> to the glory of the Lord himself and to show our readiness to help.<n id="4" />

When<n id="1" /> I was with you and was in need, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia fully supplied my needs.<n id="2" /> I<n id="3" /> kept myself from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue to do so.

For how<n id="1" /> were you treated worse than the other churches, except that I myself was not a burden to you? Forgive me this injustice!

For I am afraid that somehow when I come I will not find you what I wish, and you will find me<n id="1" /> not what you wish. I am afraid that<n id="2" /> somehow there may be quarreling, jealousy, intense anger, selfish ambition,<n id="3" /> slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder.

I said before when I was present the second time and now, though absent, I say again to those who sinned previously and to all the rest, that if I come again, I will not spare anyone,<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">But from those who were influential<n id="1" /> (whatever they were makes no difference to me; God shows no favoritism between people<n id="2" />) &#8211; those influential leaders<n id="3" /> added<n id="4" /> nothing to my message.<n id="5" />

Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his descendant.<n id="1" /> Scripture<n id="2" /> does not say, &#8220;and to the descendants<sc>,&#8221;sc><n id="3" /> referring to many, but &#8220;<b><i>and to your descendanti>b><sc>,&#8221;sc><n id="4" /> referring to one, who is Christ.

For it is written:p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;<b><i>Rejoice, O barren woman who does not bear children;i>b><n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry"><b><i>break forth and shout, you who have no birth pains,i>b>p> <p class="poetry"><b><i>because the children of the desolate woman are more numerousi>b>p> <p class="poetry"><b><i>than those of the woman who has a husbandi>b><sc>.&#8221;sc><n id="2" />p>

But what does the scripture say? &#8220;<i><b>Throw out the slave woman and her sonb>, <b>for the son of the slave woman will not share the inheritance with the sonb>i><sc>&#8221;sc><n id="1" /> of the free woman.

From him the whole body grows, fitted and held together<n id="1" /> through every supporting ligament.<n id="2" /> As each one does its part, the body grows in love.p>

Be careful not to allow anyone to captivate you<n id="1" /> through an empty, deceitful philosophy<n id="2" /> that is according to human traditions and the elemental spirits<n id="3" /> of the world, and not according to Christ.

For from you the message of the Lord<n id="1" /> has echoed forth not just in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place reports of your faith in God have spread,<n id="2" /> so that we do not need to say anything.

For we tell you this by the word of the Lord,<n id="1" /> that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will surely not go ahead of those who have fallen asleep.

He is the one who saved us<n id="1" /> and called us with a holy calling, not based on<n id="2" /> our works but on his own purpose and grace, granted to us in Christ Jesus before time began,<n id="3" />

Finally the crown of righteousness is reserved for me. The Lord, the righteous Judge, will award it to me in that day &#8211; and not to me only, but also to all who have set their affection on<n id="1" /> his appearing.p>

For it was fitting for him, for whom and through whom all things exist,<n id="1" /> in bringing many sons to glory, to make the pioneer<n id="2" /> of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

But Christ<n id="1" /> is faithful as a son over God&#8217;s<n id="2" /> house. We are of his house,<n id="3" /> if in fact we hold firmly<n id="4" /> to our confidence and the hope we take pride in.<n id="5" />p>

For though you should in fact be teachers by this time,<n id="1" /> you need someone to teach you the beginning elements of God&#8217;s utterances.<n id="2" /> You have gone back to needing<n id="3" /> milk, not<n id="4" /> solid food.

For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love you have demonstrated for his name, in having served and continuing to serve the saints.
