Then<n id="1" /> the Egyptians will know that I am the <sc>Lordsc>, when I extend my hand<n id="2" /> over Egypt and bring the Israelites out from among them.p>

All the Egyptians dug around the Nile for water to drink,<n id="1" /> because they could not drink the water of the Nile.p>

But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief,<n id="1" /> he hardened<n id="2" /> his heart and did not listen to them, just as the <sc>Lordsc> had predicted.<n id="3" />p>

<p class="bodytext">The magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for boils were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians.

For by now I could have stretched out<n id="1" /> my hand and struck you and your people with plague, and you would have been destroyed<n id="2" /> from the earth.

When Pharaoh saw<n id="1" /> that the rain and hail and thunder ceased, he sinned again:<n id="2" /> both he and his servants hardened<n id="3" /> their hearts.

Moses said, &#8220;We will go with our young and our old, with our sons and our daughters, and with our sheep and our cattle we will go, because we are to hold<n id="1" /> a pilgrim feast for the <sc>Lordsc>.&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">He said to them, &#8220;The <sc>Lordsc> will need to be with you<n id="1" /> if I release you and your dependents!<n id="2" /> Watch out!<n id="3" /> Trouble is right in front of you!<n id="4" />

No!<n id="1" /> Go, you men<n id="2" /> only, and serve the <sc>Lordsc>, for that<n id="3" /> is what you want.&#8221;<n id="4" /> Then Moses and Aaron<n id="5" /> were driven<n id="6" /> out of Pharaoh&#8217;s presence.p>

Pharaoh said to him, &#8220;Go from me!<n id="1" /> Watch out for yourself! Do not appear before me again,<n id="2" /> for when<n id="3" /> you see my face you will die!&#8221;

Do not eat it raw<n id="1" /> or boiled in water, but roast it over the fire with its head, its legs, and its entrails.

For seven days<n id="1" /> yeast must not be found in your houses, for whoever eats what is made with yeast &#8211; that person<n id="2" /> will be cut off from the community of Israel, whether a foreigner<n id="3" /> or one born in the land.

When you enter the land that the <sc>Lordsc> will give to you, just as he said, you must observe<n id="1" /> this ceremony.

<p class="bodytext">When the <sc>Lordsc> brings you<n id="1" /> into the land of the Canaanites,<n id="2" /> as he swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it<n id="3" /> to you,

<n id="1" /><p class="bodytext">In the future,<n id="2" /> when your son asks you<n id="3" /> &#8216;What is this?&#8217;<n id="4" /> you are to tell him, &#8216;With a mighty hand<n id="5" /> the <sc>Lordsc> brought us out from Egypt, from the land of slavery.<n id="6" />

It will be for a sign on your hand and for frontlets<n id="1" /> on your forehead, for with a mighty hand the <sc>Lordsc> brought us out of Egypt.&#8221;<n id="2" />p>

I will harden<n id="1" /> Pharaoh&#8217;s heart, and he will chase after them. I will gain honor<n id="2" /> because of Pharaoh and because of all his army, and the Egyptians will know<n id="3" /> that I am the <sc>Lordsc>.&#8221; So this is what they did.<n id="4" />p>

He jammed<n id="1" /> the wheels of their chariots so that they had difficulty driving,<n id="2" /> and the Egyptians said, &#8220;Let&#8217;s flee<n id="3" /> from Israel, for the <sc>Lordsc> fights<n id="4" /> for them against Egypt!&#8221;p>

Then they came to Marah,<n id="1" /> but they were not able to drink<n id="2" /> the waters of Marah, because<n id="3" /> they were bitter.<n id="4" /> (That is<n id="5" /> why its name was<n id="6" /> Marah.)p>

<p class="bodytext">Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, &#8220;In the evening<n id="1" /> you will know that the <sc>Lordsc> has brought you out of the land of Egypt,
