He did what displeased the <sc>Lordsc><n id="1" /> just as Jehoiakim had done.p>

For I will soon summon all the peoples of the kingdoms of the north,&#8221; says the <sc>Lordsc>. &#8220;They will come and their kings will set up their thrones<n id="1" /> near the entrances of the gates of Jerusalem.<n id="2" /> They will attack all the walls surrounding it, and all the towns in Judah.<n id="3" />

That is, I will punish the Egyptians, the Judeans, the Edomites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, and all the desert people who cut their hair short at the temples.<n id="1" /> I will do so because none of the people of those nations are really circumcised in the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s sight.<n id="2" /> Moreover, none of the people of Israel<n id="3" /> are circumcised when it comes to their hearts.&#8221;<n id="4" />p>

I will bring on that land everything that I said I would. I will bring on it everything that is written in this book. I will bring on it everything that Jeremiah has prophesied against all the nations.<n id="1" />

the foreigners living in Egypt;<n id="1" /> all the kings of the land of Uz;<n id="2" /> all the kings of the land of the Philistines,<n id="3" /> the people of Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, the people who had been left alive from Ashdod;<n id="4" />

Jeremiah had just barely finished saying all the <sc>Lordsc> had commanded him to say to all the people. All at once some<n id="1" /> of the priests, the prophets, and the people grabbed him and shouted, &#8220;You deserve to die!<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">Then Jeremiah made his defense before all the officials and all the people.<n id="1" /> &#8220;The <sc>Lordsc> sent me to prophesy everything you have heard me say against this temple and against this city.

<p class="bodytext">Jeremiah finished telling all the people all these things the <sc>Lordsc> their God had sent him to tell them.<n id="1" />

Instead Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers led off all the Judean remnant who had come back to live in the land of Judah from all the nations where they had been scattered.<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">Then all the men who were aware that their wives were sacrificing to other gods, as well as all their wives, answered Jeremiah. There was a great crowd of them representing all the people who lived in northern and southern Egypt.<n id="1" /> They answered,

But<n id="1" /> listen to what the <sc>Lordsc> has to say, all you people of Judah who are living in the land of Egypt. The <sc>Lordsc> says, &#8216;I hereby swear by my own great name that none of the people of Judah who are living anywhere in Egypt will ever again invoke my name in their oaths! Never again will any of them use it in an oath saying, &#8220;As surely as the Lord <sc>Godsc> lives&#8230;.&#8221;<n id="2" />

Then the <sc>Lordsc> said, &#8220;This means<n id="1" /> destruction will break out from the north on all who live in the land.

<t /><p class="poetry">Now listen to what the Lord has to say, you descendants<n id="1" /> of Jacob,p> <p class="poetry">all you family groups from the nation<n id="2" /> of Israel.p>

<p class="poetry">I planted you in the landp> <p class="poetry">like a special vine of the very best stock.p> <p class="poetry">Why in the world have you turned into something like a wild vinep> <p class="poetry">that produces rotten, foul-smelling grapes?<n id="1" />p>

<p class="poetry">I looked and saw that the fruitful land had become a desertp> <p class="poetry">and that all of the cities had been laid in ruins.p> <p class="poetry">The <sc>Lordsc> had brought this all aboutp> <p class="poetry">because of his blazing anger.<n id="1" />p>

<p class="poetry">All this will happen because the <sc>Lordsc> said,<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;The whole land will be desolate;p> <p class="poetry">however, I will not completely destroy it.p>

<p class="bodytext">The <sc>Lordsc> says, &#8220;Watch out!<n id="1" /> The time is soon coming when I will punish all those who are circumcised only in the flesh.<n id="2" />

<p class="poetry">The gates of the towns in southern Judah will be shut tight.<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">No one will be able to go in or out of them.<n id="2" />p> <p class="poetry">All Judah will be carried off into exile.p> <p class="poetry">They will be completely carried off into exile.&#8217;&#8221;<n id="3" />p>

<p class="poetry">So their land will become an object of horror.<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">People will forever hiss out their scorn over it.p> <p class="poetry">All who pass that way will be filled with horrorp> <p class="poetry">and will shake their heads in derision.<n id="2" />p>

<p class="poetry">But I will punish you as your deeds deserve,&#8217;p> <p class="poetry">says the <sc>Lordsc>.<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">&#8216;I will set fire to your palace;p> <p class="poetry">it will burn up everything around it.&#8217;&#8221;<n id="2" />p>
