The city is sure to fall into the hands of the Babylonians.<n id="1" /> Yet, in spite of this,<n id="2" /> you, Lord <sc>Godsc>,<n id="3" /> have said to me, &#8220;Buy that field with silver and have the transaction legally witnessed.&#8221;&#8217;&#8221;<n id="4" />p>

Therefore I, the <sc>Lordsc>, say:<n id="1" /> &#8216;I will indeed hand<n id="2" /> this city over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and the Babylonian army.<n id="3" /> They will capture it.

I will give them a single-minded purpose to live in a way that always shows respect for me. They will want to do that for<n id="1" /> their own good and the good of the children who descend from them.

I will make a lasting covenant<n id="1" /> with them that I will never stop doing good to them.<n id="2" /> I will fill their hearts and minds with respect for me so that<n id="3" /> they will never again turn<n id="4" /> away from me.

You and your people<n id="1" /> are saying that this land will become desolate, uninhabited by either people or animals. You are saying that it will be handed over to the Babylonians.<n id="2" /> But fields<n id="3" /> will again be bought in this land.<n id="4" />

I will hand them over to their enemies who want to kill them. Their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.<n id="1" />

I will also hand King Zedekiah of Judah and his officials over to their enemies who want to kill them. I will hand them over to the army of the king of Babylon, even though they have temporarily withdrawn from attacking you.<n id="1" />

Then I set cups and pitchers full of wine in front of the members of the Rechabite community and said to them, &#8220;Have some wine.&#8221;<n id="1" />

The officials were very angry<n id="1" /> at Jeremiah. They had him flogged and put in prison in the house of Jonathan, the royal secretary, which they had converted into a place for confining prisoners.<n id="2" />p>

Then Jeremiah asked King Zedekiah, &#8220;What crime have I committed against you, or the officials who serve you, or the people of Judah? What have I done to make you people throw me into prison?<n id="1" />

But if you do not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, this city will be handed over to the Babylonians<n id="1" /> and they will burn it down. You yourself will not escape from them.&#8217;&#8221;<n id="2" />

Then Jeremiah answered, &#8220;You will not be handed over to them. Please obey the <sc>Lordsc> by doing what I have been telling you.<n id="1" /> Then all will go well with you and your life will be spared.<n id="2" />

But I will rescue you when it happens.<n id="1" /> I, the <sc>Lordsc>, affirm it!<n id="2" /> You will not be handed over to those whom you fear.<n id="3" />

But Baruch son of Neriah is stirring you up against us.<n id="1" /> He wants to hand us over<n id="2" /> to the Babylonians<n id="3" /> so that they will kill us or carry us off into exile in Babylon.&#8221;

To this day your people<n id="1" /> have shown no contrition! They have not revered me nor followed the laws and statutes I commanded<n id="2" /> you and your ancestors.&#8217;p>

I will hand them over to Nebuchadnezzar and his troops, who want to kill them. But later on, people will live in Egypt again as they did in former times. I, the <sc>Lordsc>, affirm it!&#8221;<n id="1" />p>

<p class="poetry">When his voice thunders, the waters in the heavens roar.p> <p class="poetry">He makes the clouds rise from the far-off horizons.p> <p class="poetry">He makes the lightning flash out in the midst of the rain.p> <p class="poetry">He unleashes the wind from the places where he stores it.p>

<p class="poetry">For the <sc>Lordsc> is ready to destroy Babylon,p> <p class="poetry">and put an end to her loud noise.p> <p class="poetry">Their waves<n id="1" /> will roar like turbulent<n id="2" /> waters.p> <p class="poetry">They will make a deafening noise.<n id="3" />p>

He had Zedekiah&#8217;s eyes put out and had him bound in chains.<n id="1" /> Then the king of Babylon had him led off to Babylon and he was imprisoned there until the day he died.p>

He was given daily provisions by the king of Babylon for the rest of his life until the day he died.p>
