<p class="bodytext">Caleb son of Jephunneh was assigned Kiriath Arba (that is Hebron) within the tribe of Judah, according to the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s instructions to Joshua. (Arba was the father of Anak.)<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">The descendants of Joseph said to Joshua, &#8220;Why have you assigned us only one tribal allotment? After all, we have many people, for until now the <sc>Lordsc> has enabled us to increase in number.&#8221;<n id="1" />

So Joshua said to the Israelites: &#8220;How long do you intend to put off occupying<n id="1" /> the land the <sc>Lordsc> God of your ancestors<n id="2" /> has given you?

But the Levites will not have an allotted portion among you, for their inheritance is to serve the <sc>Lordsc>.<n id="1" /> Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have already received their allotted land<n id="2" /> east of the Jordan which Moses the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s servant assigned them.&#8221;p>

As the <sc>Lordsc> had instructed, they gave him the city he requested &#8211; Timnath Serah in the Ephraimite hill country. He built up the city and lived in it.p>

The one who committed manslaughter<n id="1" /> should escape to one of these cities, stand at the entrance of the city gate, and present his case to the leaders of that city.<n id="2" /> They should then bring him into the city, give him a place to stay, and let him live there.<n id="3" />

Beyond the Jordan east of Jericho<n id="1" /> they selected<n id="2" /> Bezer in the desert on the plain belonging to the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead belonging to the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan belonging to the tribe of Manasseh.

The <sc>Lordsc> made them secure,<n id="1" /> in fulfillment of all he had solemnly promised their ancestors.<n id="2" /> None of their enemies could resist them.<n id="3" />

Now the <sc>Lordsc> your God has made your fellow Israelites secure,<n id="1" /> just as he promised them. So now you may turn around and go to your homes<n id="2" /> in your own land<n id="3" /> which Moses the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s servant assigned to you east of the Jordan.

The <sc>Lordsc> made the Jordan a boundary between us and you Reubenites and Gadites. You have no right to worship the <sc>Lordsc>.&#8217;<n id="1" /> In this way your descendants might cause our descendants to stop obeying<n id="2" /> the <sc>Lordsc>.

If you violate the covenantal laws of the <sc>Lordsc> your God which he commanded you to keep,<n id="1" /> and follow, worship, and bow down to other gods,<n id="2" /> the <sc>Lordsc> will be very angry with you and you will disappear<n id="3" /> quickly from the good land which he gave to you.&#8221;p>

but I took your father Abraham from beyond the Euphrates<n id="1" /> and brought him into<n id="2" /> the entire land of Canaan. I made his descendants numerous; I gave him Isaac,

You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho.<n id="1" /> The leaders<n id="2" /> of Jericho, as well as the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites, fought with you, but I handed them over to you.

I gave you a land in<n id="1" /> which you had not worked hard; you took up residence in cities you did not build and you are eating the produce of<n id="2" /> vineyards and olive groves you did not plant.&#8217;p>

Indeed, for forty years the Israelites traveled through the desert until all the men old enough to fight when they left Egypt, the ones who had disobeyed the <sc>Lordsc>, died off.<n id="1" /> For the <sc>Lordsc> had sworn a solemn oath to them that he would not let them see the land he had sworn on oath to give them,<n id="2" /> a land rich in<n id="3" /> milk and honey.

They said to Joshua, &#8220;It was carefully reported to your subjects<n id="1" /> how the <sc>Lordsc> your God commanded Moses his servant to assign you the whole land and to destroy all who live in the land from before you. Because of you we were terrified<n id="2" /> we would lose our lives, so we did this thing.

know for certain that the <sc>Lordsc> our God will no longer drive out these nations from before you. They will trap and ensnare you;<n id="1" /> they will be a whip that tears<n id="2" /> your sides and thorns that blind<n id="3" /> your eyes until you disappear<n id="4" /> from this good land the <sc>Lordsc> your God gave you.p>

But in the same way every faithful promise the <sc>Lordsc> your God made to you has been realized,<n id="1" /> it is just as certain, if you disobey, that the <sc>Lordsc> will bring on you every judgment<n id="2" /> until he destroys you from this good land which the <sc>Lordsc> your God gave you.
