So when you cross the Jordan you must erect on Mount Ebal ¹  these stones about which I am commanding you today, and you must cover them with plaster.

‘Cursed is the one who refuses to keep the words of this law.’ Then all the people will say, ‘Amen!’

Then the two men returned – they came down from the hills, crossed the river, ¹  came to Joshua son of Nun, and reported to him all they had discovered.

He replaced them with their sons, ¹  whom Joshua circumcised. They were uncircumcised; their fathers had not circumcised them along the way.

They will attack ¹  us until we have lured them from the city, for they will say, ‘They are retreating from us like before.’ We will retreat from them.

He took five thousand men and set an ambush west of the city between Bethel ¹  and Ai.

We must let them live so we can escape the curse attached to the oath we swore to them.” ¹ 

But don’t you delay! Chase your enemies and catch them! ¹  Don’t allow them to retreat to ²  their cities, for the Lord your God is handing them over to you.” ³ 

Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought with you, but I handed them over to you; you conquered ¹  their land and I destroyed them from before you.

I sent terror ¹  ahead of you to drive out before you the two ²  Amorite kings. I gave you the victory; it was not by your swords or bows. ³ 

At that time I also warned you, ¹  ‘If you disobey, ²  I will not drive out the Canaanites ³  before you. They will ensnare you ⁴  and their gods will lure you away.’” ⁵ 

I rescued you from Egypt’s power ¹  and from the power of all who oppressed you. I drove them out before you and gave their land to you.

He said, “They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. I swear, ¹  as surely as the Lord is alive, if you had let them live, I would not kill you.”

He ordered Jether his firstborn son, “Come on! ¹  Kill them!” But Jether was too afraid to draw his sword, ²  because he was still young.

The Israelites did not remain true ¹  to the Lord their God, who had delivered them from all the enemies who lived around them.

They stopped there and decided to spend the night ¹  in Gibeah. They came into the city and sat down in the town square, but no one invited them to spend the night. ² 

They replied, “Yes, straight ahead! But hurry now, for he came to the town today, and the people are making a sacrifice at the high place.

The king of Israel said, “Oh no! ¹  Certainly the Lord has summoned these three kings so that he can hand them over to the king of Moab!”

Were the nations whom my predecessors ¹  destroyed – the nations of Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden in Telassar – rescued by their gods? ² 

In this way ¹  I will pass sentence ²  on the people of Jerusalem and Judah ³  because of all their wickedness. For they rejected me and offered sacrifices to other gods, worshiping what they made with their own hands.” ⁴
