Someone went out to the field to gather some herbs and found a wild vine.<n id="1" /> He picked some of its fruit,<n id="2" /> enough to fill up the fold of his robe. He came back, cut it up, and threw the slices<n id="3" /> into the stew pot, not knowing they were harmful.<n id="4" />

Elisha<n id="1" /> replied, &#8220;I was there in spirit when a man turned and got down from his chariot to meet you.<n id="2" /> This is not the proper time to accept silver or to accept clothes, olive groves, vineyards, sheep, cattle, and male and female servants.<n id="3" />

Then Elisha said to them, &#8220;This is not the right road or city. Follow me, and I will lead you to the man you&#8217;re looking for.&#8221; He led them to Samaria.<n id="1" />p>

An officer who was the king&#8217;s right-hand man<n id="1" /> responded to the prophet,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Look, even if the <sc>Lordsc> made it rain by opening holes in the sky, could this happen so soon?&#8221;<n id="3" /> Elisha<n id="4" /> said, &#8220;Look, you will see it happen with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of the food!&#8221;<n id="5" />p>

Then they said to one another, &#8220;It&#8217;s not right what we&#8217;re doing! This is a day to celebrate, but we haven&#8217;t told anyone.<n id="1" /> If we wait until dawn,<n id="2" /> we&#8217;ll be punished.<n id="3" /> So come on, let&#8217;s go and inform the royal palace.&#8221;

But the officer replied to the prophet, &#8220;Look, even if the <sc>Lordsc> made it rain by opening holes in the sky, could this happen so soon?&#8221;<n id="1" /> Elisha<n id="2" /> said, &#8220;Look, you will see it happen with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of the food!&#8221;<n id="3" />

&#8216;&#8220;Know for sure that I saw the shed blood of Naboth and his sons yesterday,&#8221; says the <sc>Lordsc>, &#8220;and that I will give you what you deserve right here in this plot of land,&#8221;<n id="1" /> says the <sc>Lordsc>.&#8217; So now pick him up and throw him into this plot of land, just as the <sc>Lordsc> said.&#8221;<n id="2" />p>

So the palace supervisor,<n id="1" /> the city commissioner,<n id="2" /> the leaders,<n id="3" /> and the guardians sent this message to Jehu, &#8220;We are your subjects!<n id="4" /> Whatever you say, we will do. We will not make anyone king. Do what you consider proper.&#8221;<n id="5" />p>

Therefore take note that not one of the judgments the <sc>Lordsc> announced against Ahab&#8217;s dynasty has failed to materialize. The <sc>Lordsc> had done what he announced through his servant Elijah.&#8221;<n id="1" />

Jehu sent invitations throughout Israel, and all the servants of Baal came; not one was absent. They arrived at the temple of Baal and filled it up from end to end.<n id="1" />

The Israelites said things about the <sc>Lordsc> their God that were not right.<n id="1" /> They built high places in all their cities, from the watchtower to the fortress.<n id="2" />

The king of Assyria was told,<n id="1" /> &#8220;The nations whom you deported and settled in the cities of Samaria do not know the requirements of the God of the land, so he has sent lions among them. They are killing the people<n id="2" /> because they do not know the requirements of the God of the land.&#8221;

This happened because they did not obey<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc> their God and broke his agreement with them.<n id="2" /> They did not pay attention to and obey all that Moses, the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s servant, had commanded.<n id="3" />p>

&#8220;Tell King Hezekiah of Judah this: &#8216;Don&#8217;t let your God in whom you trust mislead you when he says, &#8220;Jerusalem will not be handed over<n id="1" /> to the king of Assyria.&#8221;

<p class="poetry">So this is what the <sc>Lordsc> says about the king of Assyria:p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;He will not enter this city,p> <p class="poetry">nor will he shoot an arrow here.<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">He will not attack it with his shield-carrying warriors,<n id="2" />p> <p class="poetry">nor will he build siege works against it.p>

&#8216;Look, a time is<n id="1" /> coming when everything in your palace and the things your ancestors have accumulated to this day will be carried away to Babylon; nothing will be left,&#8217; says the <sc>Lordsc>.
