He removed the city&#8217;s residents and made them do hard labor with saws, iron picks, and axes.<n id="1" /> This was his policy<n id="2" /> with all the Ammonite cities. Then David and all the army returned to Jerusalem.p>

David looked up and saw the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s messenger standing between the earth and sky with his sword drawn and in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem. David and the leaders, covered with sackcloth, threw themselves down with their faces to the ground.<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">David said, &#8220;My son Solomon is just an inexperienced young man,<n id="1" /> and the temple to be built for the <sc>Lordsc> must be especially magnificent so it will become famous and be considered splendid by all the nations.<n id="2" /> Therefore I will make preparations for its construction.&#8221; So David made extensive preparations before he died.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">These were the sons of David who were born to him in Hebron:p> <p class="bodytext">The firstborn was Amnon, whose mother was Ahinoam from Jezreel;p> <p class="bodytext">the second was Daniel, whose mother was Abigail from Carmel;p>

<p class="bodytext">All those selected to be gatekeepers at the entrances numbered 212. Their names were recorded in the genealogical records of their settlements. David and Samuel the prophet<n id="1" /> had appointed them to their positions.<n id="2" />

<n id="1" /> David said, &#8220;Whoever attacks<n id="2" /> the Jebusites first will become commanding general!&#8221;<n id="3" /> So Joab son of Zeruiah attacked<n id="4" /> first and became commander.<n id="5" />

<p class="bodytext">Three of the thirty leaders went down to David at the rocky cliff at the cave of Adullam, while a Philistine force was camped in the Valley of Rephaim.

He received honor from<n id="1" /> the thirty warriors, though he was not one of the three elite warriors. David put him in charge of his bodyguard.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">These were the men who joined David in Ziklag, when he was banished<n id="1" /> from the presence of Saul son of Kish. (They were among the warriors who assisted him in battle.

They helped David fight against raiding bands, for all of them were warriors and leaders in the army.

Each day men came to help David until his army became very large.<n id="1" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">The following is a record of the armed warriors who came with their leaders and joined David in Hebron in order to make David king in Saul&#8217;s place, in accordance with the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s decree:<n id="1" />p>

<p class="bodytext">From the half tribe of Manasseh there were 18,000 who had been designated by name to come and make David king.p>

They spent three days feasting<n id="1" /> there with David, for their relatives had given them provisions.

So David assembled all Israel from the Shihor River<n id="1" /> in Egypt to Lebo Hamath,<n id="2" /> to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim.

David was afraid of God that day and said, &#8220;How will I ever be able to bring the ark of God up here?&#8221;

<t /><p class="bodytext">King Hiram of Tyre<n id="1" /> sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons,<n id="2" /> and carpenters to build a palace for him.

David realized that the <sc>Lordsc> had established him as king over Israel and that he had elevated<n id="1" /> his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.p>

David asked God, &#8220;Should I march up against the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?&#8221; The <sc>Lordsc> said to him, &#8220;March up! I will hand them over to you!&#8221;

So David again asked God what he should do.<n id="1" /> This time<n id="2" /> God told him, &#8220;Don&#8217;t march up after them; circle around them and come against them in front of the trees.<n id="3" />
